Charlie’s team was getting reading to take down a local gang of ruthless criminals when the operation went sideways and Charlie was the only survivor. After the complete loss of her team Charlie could not go back to the Major Crimes division and she had transferred to the Arts, Antiquities and Collectibles division where the work was safe and no one was going to get killed. Despite trying to play things safe, what Charlie wanted more than anything was to solve the mystery of what happened the day her team was killed and why she survived.
Charlie was soon given the opportunity that she craved, but it came with a caveat. She had to work with a demon from her past, Drake, and he is not just any demon but the one demon that she was bound to. Charlie had died before and Drake used his powers to bring Charlie back from the dead and this created a bond between them. Drake insisted that the bond could not have occurred if they weren’t true life mates but Charlie had been denying that truth ever since it happened. She wanted to deny the pull she has always felt for the demon, so much so that she has had a steady lover in her life just to “prove” that her and Drake were not life mates. The last thing that she wanted was to work closely with Drake and have to resist that temptation.
Unfortunately, if Charlie wanted to find answers to the mystery surrounding the death of her friends and colleagues she was going to have to do what she denied she ever would, go back to Major Crimes and partner with Drake. Drake for his part is happy with Charlie being back in his life. He wants her to accept that they are life mates and allow him to protect her but she is too stubborn for that. As it becomes clear that the mystery surrounding the deaths are somehow tied with Charlie and to her unknown lineage, truths will come out but not all secrets are revealed as the plot thickens and Drake does the unthinkable leaving Charlie confused and determined that she will have her answers.
When I read the last book in the Excalibar Investigations series I was crossing my fingers that Charlie would be a part of a spinoff series because there was more to explore with her character. I was so not disappointed with Shadow Walker! I loved the mystery behind what took place at the start of the story and what the implications of Charlies heritage were. I just have to know more! The pacing was perfect and I loved the romance element that was being explored between Drake and Charlie, there was definitely a flame burning between these two characters. The ending had me in disbelief and in agony because I want the next installment in this trilogy to be available right now! Shadow Walker was a great new series starter and I highly recommend it!
This review is based on a complimentary book I received from Author, Tiffany Shand. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.
Shadow Walker is a fast-paced urban fantasy that takes you on a rollercoaster ride and not just concerning the search for her team's murderer. Charlie also has a boyfriend that is decidedly not Drake. While not overshadowing of the plot, there is the triangle that Charlie must traverse while working on her case. One man is distracting enough but when feelings she tried to block for Drake begin to squeeze through the cracks in the wall around her heart where he is concerned, Charlie finds herself distracted by two as she tries to navigate through the crime she's trying hard to solve.
I really enjoyed Shadow Walker. Charlie is a likable protagonist who cares very much for the team she lost. She's conflicted between Scott and Drake, both of whom she she cares for even if she denies the pull the Drake. The only issue I have with the triangle is the treatment of Scott by Charlie after Drake waltzes back into her life. Charlie was a bit high schoolish instead of acting like an adult. In the end, I think Charlie will get her romantic life sorted out, but until then we'll probably see more denial regarding Drake while trying to truly figure out who and what she really wants. And that's okay. Relationships are tough, especially when you have two suitors.
Tiffany Shand wrote a hit novella with great character development and wonderful world building. The characters are personable and the descriptions used in the book were easy to visualize. I'm excited to get my hands on the rest of the trilogy and can't wait to see how the story progresses in book 2.
