Soooo... on to my actual review of the the drive.
While the drive mounts on the desktop and seems to work fine even when transferring fairly large amounts of data, it fails when trying to use Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner and NTI Shadow. Since I specifically purchased to use as a back-up device, this is not a good thing.
I'm running OS X 10.10.3 on a MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012). This is an Apple Certified Refurbished product purchased in October of 2014 that passes their Hardware Test. All my other USB devices perform as expected. I reformatted the drive numerous times (at least twice while attempting to use each of the software packages noted above. I mean, I REALLY, REALLY wanted to make this thing work.
Interestingly enough, on my MacBook Pro (also an Apple Refurb) running under 10.6.8, the drive worked fine. So I decided to see how the Iomega 160GB drive I was using as a Time Capsule on the MacBook Pro would perform on my Air. To no surprise, it worked just fine.
My conclusion... there's something about the combination of this drive, a MacBook Air and Yosemite that keeps all three of the back-up/cloning software packages I tried from working. Aside from that (not so little) quirk, and the fact that the activity light is on the back of the unit (what's up with that????), I really like the drive. Extremely small, extremely light, bus powered... heck, what's not to like? Still, since I can't use it for it's intended purpose, I am returning it and will probably replace with the Silicon Power 1TB Rugged Armor A30 Shockproof Standard 2.5-Inch USB 3.0 Military Grade External Portable Hard Drive,Black (SP010TBPHDA30S3K). It has twice the capacity and I know from experience it will work as a Time Capsule drive with my MacBook Air and Yosemite, as I just recently set one up for a client. Not as small, or light (or, in my opinion, attractive), but it'll do what I need it too, has a 1TB as opposed to 500GB capacity and it's $10 cheaper.
My advice... if you're a MacBook Air user looking for a Time Capsule drive to use under Yosemite, look elsewhere.
EDIT: I bought a drive enclosure, removed this drive from its original case, and put it into the enclosure. It's worked fine ever since and I've lost no data. I ran every diagnostic I could think of on the drive after I put it in the enclosure, and it threw no errors. So it appears the drive controller is what failed, and the drive itself was OK.
I'm still wary of it, but so far so good.
