One of the things that always discouraged me as a language learner were people who always said, after a certain age you'll never be able to learn a language and you'll never be able to speak without a noticeable accent. I never thought to ever ask these people where did they get that, but the question I had was why am I continually coming into contact with foreigners whose first language was not English who managed to speak English as good if not better than some native born English speakers; especially when everyone kept saying English was one of the most difficult languages?
Well the Shadowing technique can greatly help that problem. This book is well thought out in the phrases it gives you to Shadow and the progression from simple to more complex phrases is just perfect. It's not just a phrase book on steroids though, as it teaches you to listen so that you can give the proper response. In a language like Japanese where status is important you are given examples at every politeness level.
I don't know why Shadowing books aren't out there for more languages, though I guess a person could cobble together Shadowing materials together. Still it's very good to have it organized and right there in front of you. If you're learning Japanese and you want to develop an authentic Japanese accent, shadowing is a great tool.

One of the best techniques for listening comprehension and speaking Japanese/a foreign language
Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2015Verified Purchase
I heard about this book on YouTube and have been wanting to try it out for a while. Shadowing seems to be growing more steam in the language learning community. This is the only shadowing book I know of; although there are other Shadowing programs I hear about now like Etoeto for Japanese. This book is another Japanese learning book made for a wide group of foreigners, hence more than English translations for the Japanese in the book. I have an undergraduate degree in Japanese and I've studied abroad in Japan, so I know most of the Japanese in this book, but I want to improve my speaking abilities. This book has about 4 methods of shadowing they suggest you can use while going through this book and the Japanese they use is natural. It really what you'll hear in Japan. You have to listen to the audio over and over repeatedly to get the most out of this program. The translations are not direct translations, but they are good. I plan on buying the second book. I used this program with a relative who speak basically no Japanese and she remembered and spoke more phrases after a few short sessions using this program. I wish I had started out with shadowing when I began learning Japanese.

A great resource for those living away from native Japanese speakers. I live in South Dakota and there are no Japanese people on the college campus in my town. In fact, there aren't any Japanese people for at least 50 miles from here. This allows me to hear and speak Japanese, with the help of the resources in this book...and the more advanced follow up to this book. This is a must have for people living far from Japanese people.

My fluency and prosody are improving each day I use this, and I only use it 10-15 minutes a day. The conversations seem very real-life, not straight out of a textbook. (And therefore one should have some grounding in grammar and syntax while using this book.) I sometimes find myself repeating some of the phrases during the day, as they're getting burned into my memory. I'm just sorry that there aren't more sections in this book, as at the recommended pace of about one section a month, I'll be done with it in another couple of months. But since the latter sections are more difficult, I think I'll want to continue using them for much longer, and then I'll purchase the intermediate-advanced version. The print is relatively small, especially the furigana; I have to wear reading glasses.

I listen to this CD on my way to work. I can replay what I don't understand and look in the book to read what I am not hearing. It definitely is a great way to learn, to hone my ear to the language. Maybe the second volume has lengthier conversations vs the random sentences of volume one. I own many Japanese language books and this is one of my favorites.

This book is everything it says it is, and if your someone like me who is terrible when it comes speaking & listening this book is up your alley. Before I got this book I couldn't understand almost everything anyone was saying, but after spending time with this book, I still can't understand everything that I hear but at least I can understand more than what I could've. If you keep Shadowing everyday your skills will get better granted it will be hard at first, but it really works. Your listening comprehension & speaking will gradually get better. Absolutely worth it. Note: you have to know your kana, some basic japanese before using.

The sentences are very close to a natural Japanese conversation and progress in difficulty level at the right speed through the book. I use it for self-study and I'm really happy of it.

Perfect!

Perfect for practicing both your reading and speaking skills. This won't improve fluency, but rather, automaticity. It becomes easier to express known phrases. Could you call it muscle memory? Maybe.

Sehr gut

Iniziare a parlare giapponese
Reviewed in Italy on September 22, 2019Verified Purchase
Libro molto utile e innovativo per imparare il giapponese e sviluppare le proprie abilità nel parlato e nell'ascolto
Parte dalle basi e, come indicato anche dall'autore nell'introduzione, richiede solo 10 minuti al giorno
Ultimo ma non meno importante, il libro contiene frasi usate nella vita quotidiana quindi ancor più utile per chi vuole imparare a parlare e poter usare le conoscenze apprese anche al di fuori dello studio

Nearly perfect practice book
Reviewed in Germany on March 6, 2019Verified Purchase
The content is awesome and the conversations are authentic in content and speed (I asked a Japanese friend of mine). Unfortunately the furigana (reading hints on top of the kanji charactersl) are extreme small. It's kind of exhausting to read them. Besides of that it's an perfect purchase!

Molto utile

Ottimo per iniziare, le traduzioni forse non sono accuratissime ma non è un grosso problema, anzi stimola a studiare anche la grammatica e le varie espressioni. L'unica pecca è che non è possible scegliere direttamente l'audio relativo a ogni conversazione quindi si è costretti a mettere in pausa manualmente ogni volta-
