Short but Sweet Shadowrun Fiction

In the world of gaming, very few titles seem able to make the leap from "good game" to "good game fiction." For me, only the renowned game world of Warhammer 40K has consistently hooked me with novels and short stories that make excellent use of its dark, imaginative future.

Now I can add another game to that exclusive list: Shadowrun. As with 40K, Shadowrun's darkly imaginative futuristic vision, one that unexpectedly yet successfully merges cyberpunk with fantasy, has proven to be very fertile ground for talented writers who are as entranced by this noirish and futuristic urban fantasy vision as I am. My first foray into the literary side of Shadowrun was the superlative short story collection, "Spells and Chrome," a title I highly recommend. "Another Rainy Night" continues this legacy of excellence.

Honestly, "Another Rainy Night" more properly belongs in the "Spells and Chrome" collection than as a standalone title because it comes in at a scant thirty pages, something that doesn't even qualify as a "novella" in my opinion (and doesn't really deserve its $1.99 price tag considering its brevity- .99 cents would be more fair). However, short as it may be, author Patrick Goodman created a perfect noir-inspired tale about a vampire hunter and a Knight Errant detective (they are the private security service of the Sixth World) out to capture a vicious vampire serial killer who is on a mission to take back the night. Again, because of the brevity of the story, there isn't too much depth to "Another Rainy Night" - it plays outs in a workmanlike fashion without any twists - but, regardless, it gets the job done and fits in perfectly with the dark urban fantasy world of Shadowrun.

If you are new to Shadowrun, this brief tale might be a good place to start!

Reading Another Rainy Night took me back to the time in high school when I read my first Shadowrun book: Into The Shadows. I had discovered a new and exciting fictional world. I was entertained, drawn into the story and disappointed when it ended because I liked it and wanted more. The characters are interesting, not just one dimensional cutouts. The protagonist, Thomas McAllister, isn't the normal heavily cybered gillette or master mage combat machine who grew up in the Sprawl, but rather a Texas academic who has been compelled to take action due to demons from his past as well as atrocities in the present. He's confident in his abilities and self-aware enough to know what he is and is not capable of. I find that this makes him a likable and relatable person. The supporting cast are also portrayed as real folks with foibles of their own. The writing is solid and descriptive without getting bogged down in minutiae. The plot revealed so far hints at much more action and danger for Dr. McAllister. If he keeps up this level of quality, I think Mr. Goodman has a pretty good shot at being remembered with Tom Dowd, and Michael Stackpole for contributions to the SR universe. If you are a Shadowrun fan, slot your credstick and drop some nuyen on this book. You won't be let down!

A bit short but worth the price

This is not a very long story but it paints the Sixth World well. You follow the exploits of the Texan teacher, Thomas McAllister who has been called in to Denver to do some consulting work for Knight Errand (a powerful law enforcement security corporation). It appears there has been a number of strange serial murders that McAllister may have some personal connection to. The plot begins to possibly hint at the cause of the escalating state of the infected (think ghouls and vampires) in the Shadowrun setting.

The narrative moves at a very brisk pace, which honestly is nice, as it keeps the story moving. The downside to it is that this story is very short. But the sequel, Sail Away Sweet Sister, should be out shortly to help add more to McAllister's story.

Another Rainy Night is (hopefully) the first of a series and I cannot wait for more to come. Written with excellent pacing, believable characters, and an interesting plot I was only disappointed when the book ended. I do hope this is but a taste of good things to come in the Shadowrun world.
