I've had this sitting in my library, untouched, for the past few years. Been debating whether or not I want to sit down and read it. Another review soured my impression, but I'm happy to say it defied my original preconceptions and delivered a very solid read.
I find the first-person perspective does a lot to humanize any protagonist, and for an Infected shadowrunner, humanization is more important than ever before, as anonymity makes a protagonist boring.
It's very easy to write up a vampire with a heavy-handed dose of self-loathing melodrama. Red notes the generally shitty downside to having to drink people, but doesn't really mope about it for too terribly long.
The various ghouls he shares the story with are likewise humanized in various ways, and several ideas the author presents will find their way to my table shortly, players beware.
All in all, between the Jimmy Kincaid stories, Crimson, and the Thomas McCallister novellas, I've a cautious optimism for the future of Shadowrun fiction.
All in all, I enjoyed it and would probably be happy if there was a sequel.
The conflict in the book is great shadowrun, with magic, tech, and prep all combining to make the score, but the real human observations about choice and belonging are what stuck with me the most after finishing this book.
