Most folks see Puyallup as the worst Seattle’s got to offer; a tangled mess of metahumanity and greed, poverty and slums, vice and corruption, where the crime is more organized than the government. They call it a Barrens, an armpit, a cesspool.
Jimmy Kincaid, though, calls it home. Walking the line between shadows and the desperate light, semi-legit like only a Puyallup brat and former cop can be, he insists Puyallup has a heart and a soul, that it’s a place of life, magic, and starving hope. A former combat mage, now as burned out as his neighborhood, he does what he can to police the worst excesses of the crime-riddled city he loves.
In the darkness of the Seattle Sprawl, what’s one more murder? To Kincaid, it’s everything. He’s got a dead mentor, a hermetic group in need, and a mysterious file that might have been worth killing for. To unlock the data and get a little justice, he’ll face the worst the Sprawl has to offer, wading through blood, darkness, and a murderous web of lies.
It’s a good thing he’s got friends—in high and low places…

About the author

Russell Zimmerman ("Rusty" when he's relaxing) has been a freelance game developer and fiction writer for over a decade now, with products ranging from wargames like Warmachine and Gangs of the Undercity to video games like the international award winner Satellite Reign, but his meat and potatoes has been RPGs and their tie-in fiction. He's contributed to the World of Darkness, Mutants & Masterminds, Earthdawn, and -- especially -- Shadowrun, with his best-selling line of novels featuring noir PI Jimmy Kincaid.
When he's not busy juggling freelance projects and telling stories about sci-fi heroes or cyberpunk protagonists, Russell can be found hanging out with his wife, shooting strangers in Overwatch, or slinging dice and telling stories with his friends.

Pretty flapping good, that's how good. An easy read, with fast paced action that's fun to get into and move along with. The main character, Jimmy Kincaid, is likable enough skin to slip into for the ride, and offers a point of view that us modern readers can understand the grim and dirty of the Shadowrun world pretty well from.
How Jimmy has to plan around a vampire's wound from years ago, stripping him of much of his magical power, feels almost like watching episodes of Leverage (I say that as a compliment) in how he has to problem solve around his problems. He doesn't get anything handed to him on a platter, and this is a character that has to work hard for his denouement. It makes the ending all the better and feels all the more earned.
Even though many of the characters flit in an out of Jimmy's life briefly, like many parts of a Shadowrunning crew do, Zimmerman does a good job bringing personality to most of them with the page space that he has. Standouts are the aptly named Pinkerton, the dwarven private dick, and Gentry, the wannabe elf ranger Decker with a love of choco-punch shakes.
An excellent read, and an excellent entry into the Shadowrun world if you're just starting out. Consider his short story 'Neat', as well.
While I gave his "just" 4 stars (instead of 5 like so many others), I'll point out that 5 stars is for Hugo award winning stuff.
Shaken is fantastic at being /exactly/ what it is, and is money well spent. You won't regret it.
See you on the streets, chummer.
Russell Zimmerman's book, "Shaken," adds a third element: a hard-boiled detective story, complete with a fedora-wearing private eye named Jimmie Kincaid. Jimmie is cut from the same cloth as Sam Spade or Mike Hammer, but he's also an elf with low-grade magic ability and cybernetic eyes. Welcome to Shadowrun, chummer.
Zimmerman's prose channels the greats, like Hammett, but with a contemporary feel. His first-person narration feels conversational and natural, despite the genre stylings. The setting may be a lot to take in, for the uninitiated, but as a Shadowrun fan, I was glad the book didn't spend a lot of time establishing the fundamentals of the world. Genre fans should be able to keep up, but foreknowledge of the Sixth World is definitely an advantage.
"Shaken" is a fun, breezy read, featuring a compelling protagonist and a propulsive plot. I highly recommend it for fans of urban fantasy and gritty detective stories, and especially for fans of Shadowrun.
I heartily recommend the book.
About the book, I loved the story, the characters, pretty much the entire deal. This is the way Shadowrun stories should be told. Well done! If you are familiar with the Shadowrun universe (the RPG or the other novels, not the X-Box game) you should already own this book and be reading it!
5 Stars, only because I can't add a 6th.
Can't wait to see the next adventure
