As I read Shadows of the Keeper by Karey Brown, I became so immersed in the story I lost all concept of reality and time. This book was that good! Brown's description is powerful and second to none as it firmly plants readers in the setting. The characters are well drawn and realistic, even though the story is otherworldly. With the popularity of speculative fiction, so many people attempt to write it but appear to struggle with style, pacing, and characterization that are strong enough for readers to suspend disbelief. Ms. Brown could give lessons on how to do it correctly. The first few pages are a little bit slow with description, but once the reader gets a little deeper into the story, everything makes sense, including her careful setup. I particularly appreciate the strength of the heroine who has no trouble standing on her own two feet. She can definitely take care of herself under "normal" conditions (normal per this story).
