So, you've read Obsidian and possibly Onyx and you still need a little more. Here it is, the story of Daemon and Dee's brother Dawson. Dawson is absent in both Obsidian and Onyx, having been killed by the Arum with his human girlfriend, Bethany. But this is the story of how Dawson innocently met Bethany and how they got to know each other.
The story is told from both Bethany's and Dawson's points of view and you'll see where Daemon's hatred of humans comes from and probably not blame him.
Dawson and Daemon are so different from each other. Daemon is already the most powerful at killing Arum and saves Dawson from getting killed in one scene. Dawson is more like Dee, happy go lucky, a people person and he is instantly taken with Bethany, a new student at their high school. He latches on to her immediately, charming her with his attention and personality. She's the only one that can tell him from Daemon because Daemon doesn't smile.
They don't have a lot in common except that they enjoy each other's company. And that's really all it takes. Bethany is staying with her family who have moved in with a sick uncle who needs help during his recovery from cancer. He's a character we already know if you've read Obsidian and Onyx.
This is the novel that clears up all those questions you have about who Dawson is as a person and what went on with Bethany. Why they both came home with blood on their clothes and what really happened that day.
I do think you will need to read this one before OPAL. Opal hasn't come out yet, but I think it's key we know what happened to know what's coming. And though this is a novella, it still felt just as detailed and adrenaline filled as the two full length novels already published.
Do I recommend it? You betcha! Highly recommended for anyone reading the series. I again stress that you need to read the novels before you read this one. It just reveals too much of what's going on and will spoil the surprise.
Then there is Dawson and Bethany. Reading about how they fell in love, and the perfect match they were to each other just melted my heart into a puddle of happy goo. From the minute they laid eyes on each other it was pure attraction, and Dawson doesn't wait any time because the very next day he's asking Beth out. Of course, everyone freaked, because aliens and humans are a big no-no. I laughed my ass off when Daemon made a comment about never ever dating a human. But even when they're pissed at Dawson, Daemon and Dee always back him up.
This brings me to my favorite scene. It's the saddest scene of all, but I liked it the most because it was the most powerful and moving. It's when Daemon and Dee get the news that Dawson isn't coming back because he is gone. Pain, loss, sorrow, anger, all those emotions were masterfully captured to the point where I couldn't help tearing up. However, once I got myself together again I started thinking, and some things don't add up. My intuition tells me lies might have been said, and I so hope I'm right because it changes everything. And darn it! When is Onyx coming out!?!
The drama in this one was WOW!! Seeing Dawson and getting to know him gave me a different perspective of Daemon and DeeDee. The wirlwind of my emotions where everywhere and I was starting to love Dawson because of his sweet personality. I loved his point of view and his relationship with Bethany. It was a great storyline and seeing how the Arum operated was that they are cruel things and I understood Daemons reasoning to keep his siblings safe. His love for Bethany was out of this world adorable; he would do anything for her and she feels the same way.
Bethany was a very strong character and she is similar to Katy in a few ways: They both fall in love with hot aliens, loves to go against some of the rules and also tries to get along with Dawsons family and friends. I cried near the ending because of the outcome of this couple. I did know it was coming but it still happened. Jennifer has a way with words because she gets me all emotional with some of her novels this one included. If you loved Obsidian, be sure to pick up this one right away !!
