The stories are both funny and disturbing. I was so rattled by A Good Son I had to put this book away for a day.
Take your time with these stories. They are worth savoring and revisting after some pondering about the men you know.
Grauke's elegant prose presents 13 male characters who are not stereotypes, thank God. Are they the 'new men'trying to come to terms with their misunderstood roles in today's society? Are they 'less manly' than the Audie Murphy movie hero? Are they too 'chickified' and less macho than their dads and uncles? Are they more caring than their career-minded wives? Are they afraid of their own shadows? All/some/none of the above? I did not have to have an answer. I enjoyed all the stories and Grauke's skill at having his characters look back and forward almost simultaneously. The book cover is arresting and in stark contrast to the fragile souls between the covers.
