It's never easy for any bibliophile to pick their favorite books, but Rick Lai's SHADOWS OF THE OPERA: RETRIBUTION IN BLOOD (as well as its predecessor MARK OF THE REVENANT) easily occupies my top ten, if not my top five. When seeking out New Pulp, fans look for stories of astonishing heroes who lead them into action-packed adventures. Not only does Lai deliver on that front, he presents a tremendously cerebral experiences as well. Lai's veteran experience with crossover fiction fills this book with dozens of insightful connections between countless fictional works, from Leroux's Phantom of the Opera to the Cthulhu Mythos and beyond. Simply put, this book is a treat for fans of pulp and Victorian fiction alike, achieving something quite like the old pulps but much, much better. I notice something new with every reread. Unmissable.

Retribution in Blood is a wonderful collection of interlocking stories featuring the Revenant and her various Acolytes ‘war against The Black Coats. Rick Lai has created a world populated with a huge cast of characters from Victorian popular fiction hailing from Europe, Asia, the States and beyond. Mr. Lai is to be commended on the intricate amount of research that went into these stories, making at times obscure genealogical connections between various characters & their families. This attention to detail allows the reader to see the long term, at times multi-generational, fallout of the ongoing war with the Black Coats. Fans of Kim Newman, Alan Moore and P.J. Farmer should feel right at home with this highly entertaining novel.
My reason for the lack of a fifth star is due to poor editing. My Kindle version is full of minor spelling errors that detracted from my total enjoyment. I understand that one or two can slip through, but after a certain point, the frequency of the typos interrupts the flow of the book. It gives one the impression that the manuscript was rushed through (I wonder if the same mistakes are present in the $22.00 paperback version). I wouldn't have any objections to paying more per e-book if Black Coat Press could provide a tighter editing job.

What I love about these stories is that in the movie in my mind, they come alive like a cool late 60's, early 70's movie.
Hammer Films costumes and sets and actors like Caroline Munro, Diana Rigg, Julie Newmar and Yvonne Craig have starring roles.
Very much 19th Century France according to the swinging 60's/70's.
The author, Rick Lai weaves a fantastic tapestry, involving fascinating characters from international literature and cinema, in with his own heroic, crusading female heroes!
I HIGHLY recommend all the books in this series.!

Rick Lai knows his stuff when it comes to the pulp world, and it shows in these stories. The cast of characters is quite large, but they all are very important to the overall arc that is developing in the book. In the tradition of the old stories, they all have their agendas and are playing their own games. At times, with all the people running around and all the plots within plots, things threaten to get confusing, but Lai keeps it all managable so the schemes don't bog down the story.
But there is one warning I would give to those thinking of buying this book: If you don't already have a thorough knowledge of early 20th century pulp, most of the references will be lost on you. I picked this book up because I'm a Phantom Of The Opera nut, and I ended up having to stop rather frequently to do research because I didn't quite understand who some characters were and what their story was.
But all the stories are well written and tie together nicely even though they can stand alone just fine. Each chapter is exciting and full of the action that keeps you engaged, which makes this book is a wonderful way to learn about pulp.

Rick Lai does a great Job drawing on his love of Classic Pulp fiction to create something evocative of that but also new.
And there is plenty for Femslash Shippers to enjoy.
