Character development was virtually nonexistent, which is always bad. If an author can't at least have properly fleshed out main characters, then a story simply isn't worth reading. The H and h were both likeable, on a surface level, but the problem is that there just wasn't any depth to either of them.
I also had a problem with some of the religious undertones in this book. I am yet to see anything indicating that it's in a religious fiction category (is that even a thing?), but there were enough religious references that it drew my notice. Had either of the main characters been portrayed as being religious, then I would have thought nothing of it. But since the groundwork hadn't been properly laid, I found myself wondering if I had accidentally stumbled into a genre that I don't normally shop. No offense to religious fiction, but it simply isn't my cup of tea.
By the time I got to about the 50-60% point, I started skimming. I absolutely hate having to do that when I'm trying to read for enjoyment and a bit of escapism, which is, of course, the purpose in reading fiction in the first place. I am an avid reader and I love getting lost in a good story, so it's beyond annoying when I've spent money on something that sounds like it's going to be a good read only to find that it's so horrible I can't read it all the way through without skimming some of the content.
This book is not for the squeamish. There were some scenes that made me flinch more than once, especially since you can't help but put yourself in the heroine's shoes and wonder what you would have done in those all-too-realistic situations (her screams were mine). But the love between Jack and Shelly was life-affirming and heart deep, and kept me reading despite my own squeamishness.
I hate spoilers so I won't go into the details, but I had a suspicion early on who one of the villains was, and I was right. That was a teensy bit of a letdown for me because I would have preferred to be wrong. Still, IN SHADOWS contained enough surprises it made for a fascinating story, and one I can heartily recommend.
I was surprised the novel continued after the case was resolved! Turns out there were final details to reveal! While the pacing slowed considerably, the twists brought the story full circle! The epilogue was sweet and promising!
Really an excellent thriller and the romance with a happily married couple was refreshing! Definitely a quality book!
