Five star classic!

I only discovered Brother Ali in the last six months on Pandora, and I've picked up all of his albums. His talent as an MC is truly jawdropping - blistering flow, incredible storyteller, raps that can be both deeply personal and spiritual, and oftentimes really funny. On this debut album, Ali shows his hunger to gain respect - not anger, but drive to prove he's the best in the game. Songs like "Backstage Pacin'" and "Champion" are full of the confidence and swagger of a man on a mission who will not be stopped. He is comfortable talking about his struggles in life on "Room With A View" and the heartbreaking "Picket Fence," but still has an uplifting message of hope for humanity on the title track and "Soul Whisper" that includes a Muslim prayer in the verse.

This isn't to say that the album is always heavy and serious - it's very entertaining. The battle rap "Blah Blah Blah" featuring Slug of Atmosphere is funny as hell, recounting fights he lost on "Win Some Lose Some" and admitting he's not pretty as an albino but still sexy and confident on "Forest Whitiker" will put a smile on your face. Some of the best songs on the album are his character raps like "Prince Charming" that show a lady's man who's really a stalker, and the crowning track "Dorian" where the narrator gets arrested himself after beating up an abusive husband - not your normal fare for a hip hop album, but Ali pulls it all off with ease.

The beats and production on this album created by Ant (also of Atmosphere) are impeccable - your head will be bumping the entire album, but there's still enough space for Ali to rhyme, and his voice is very warm and inviting. On some of his later albums there might be one or two weaker songs, but Ali bursts out of the gates here with an unstoppable power and there isn't a single weak track in the bunch. If you consider yourself even a passing fan of underground hip hop you must add this album to your library immediately. Simply put, it is essential.

Get the Champion EP instead

The beats here aren't as soul shaking as on The Undisputed Truth and many of the best rhymes can be found on the Champion Ep (with better beats behind them). Brother Ali is always amazing, but this seemed too austere to be like his other records (I believe Ant needs to answer for that). It doesn't have a track to get me hooked like "Rain Water" or "Uncle Sam Goddamn." It's still personal and his storytelling is deep, but it's not as strong as his work from a few years ago. Maybe he has less to stress him out and write about, which is good for the man, but not the storyteller.
If you're new to BA, start with the other records I mentioned, if you already know the man's music get this to support an independent artist.

Slept on

Brother Ali might be the most "slept on" M.C. alive. I saw him last night at N.Y.CS waterfront seaport for free. His flow was tight as usual; he had good stage presence as well. He might have been a little hoarse and the sytem wasn't the best. But he vibed well with the people. The venue contained some small children so he couldn't go all out as far as explicit lyrics is concerned, which was a good thing. I think the "undisputed truth" was slightly better than this C.D. However (4) Prince charming, (7) Blah blah, (10) Forrest Whitiker, (13) When the beat comes in, (?)Dorian, and the last two were pretty sharp. My favorite might be the "prelude" so reminiscint of the late J.B. don't know who it is but I listen to it over & over again. The baddest unknown and underated M.C. around. LoOking forward to that new material promised at the concert.

Solid album from a Solid artist

This is actually Brother Alis second album. He released one on Tape Cassette only called Rites of Passage. But this is his fist album ever released on CD. If you are a fan or you are just getting into Brother Ali this is a must hear, must have. My opinion its his best album. Brother Ali does truly exceed most rappers when it comes to lyrical ability and technique. Amazing Hip-Hip album from the early 2000's.

If you like indie rap, this is an album for you. Brother Ali tells some amazing stories here. You'll find the usual ego in some of the songs, but in general he is very self-deprecating -- see especially "Forrest Whitaker" and "Win Some Lose Some."

I found Brother Ali by chance, and have become a fan. His humor, passion, and sheer talent with words makes this well worth your time.

can't believe i slept on brother ali this long. this cd is great! i definitely recommend picking it up. great, soulful rap voice and knocking beats, tough to go wrong there! i think he's a bit more braggadocio on this album and more political on later albums, but then again this was his debut, so he had room to grow still

Water" to be exact. I was floored. I could'nt get "Rain Water" out of my

head. I was like a crack fiend. I purchased "Shadows on the Sun" and my

respect for Ali only grew. He has crazy flow and some deep lyrics. If you

want to hear about spinners and bling you'll be dissappointed. Brother Ali is like nothing you've ever heard before. Buy the damn cd and give

props to the one and only, BROTHER ALI
