"Is it better to die on your feet than to live on your knees."
OH MY GOSH!!! UGH....this book seriously got me going!! I loved EVERY SINGLE THING about it! My head is a mess because I am thinking about everything that went on in this wonderful story and I don't even know where to begin! I am totally going against my normal review style right now. I'm not going to go into too many details about the story because I really want you to be able to experience it the way I did. I read the Synopsis of In the Shadows a while ago when I first signed up for the ARC to do this review; however, I'd hate to say this, but prior to starting this book, I couldn't remember what it was exactly about. So, instead of going back and reading the Blurb, I jumped right in!! Needless to say, it was the best choice ever!!! I loved not knowing what I was about to read, not knowing which characters were going to be the ones I would fall in love with, and not knowing the ones that would give me the chills.
What I will say is... this story has so many twist to it that I was going to explode!! There were so many parts that I was like..."Oh My Gosh." Then there were parts that I was like... "Are you kidding me?!?"LOL. I had so many emotions going on throughout this whole story. I liked some, I hated some, and I loved some! I knew I was going to love this book the minute I read this....
"There was a fine line between love and hate and the two aren't mutually exclusive. Of course, I hate him for what he's done and for how he's treated me. But at this moment with my body aching for his touch, I know in my heart I still love him, and this alone will lead me to behave in a way I never imagined I would."
I NEED MORE!!! I want book 2...like now!! I highly recommend this story to anyone who likes to fall in love, have your brain scattered with every emotion, and is willing to just dive right into a story that's full of suspense! If you have not read, I suggest you get started now! It will not disappoint!!
Not at all the ending I expected! I wish that Ella had been able to make another choice.
At the age of 17, Gabriella loses both parents and her brother in an accident, leaving her all alone with the exception of her God-parents. Stepping out o her own when they move away, she goes to work at the estate that her parents worked. Given that she has always been infatuated with the powerful and wealthy Alex, she hopes that it could be more.
Alex is a pretty dark character though and she would probably re-think her choices if she really knew what her was all about! I would have run a mile. Abuse is abuse no matter how sincere the apology.
Poor Gabriella doesn't have much luck in the man department - the fact that she is only 17 does see her make a few pretty naïve choices. I hoped that Nick would man up and take her away, but he obviously had his issues as well. Shame because I liked him - in spite of what he did!
There are lots of twists and turns and "Oh No" moment that you don't see coming. I was confused by a few unanswered questions through the story though ie: Nick's kinky sex drawer or his behaviour and Alex's fathers weird little sex dungeon under Ella's house! None of these were properly explained. I thought that they may be set ups for the next book, but not with that ending! So I was a little confused as to why they were included in the story line.
Not a bad story at all from what I believe is a first time Author.
I really wish that Amazon had a .5 star!
All I can say is wow for "In the Shadows" and wow for the ending of this book! Wow! There are definitely twists and turns to this book with a few that I didn't see coming! I am not going to repeat what this story is about, that is what the Synopsis is for. I think this book is well written especially for a first book.
I do have a few concerns about In The Shadows. One being that this book is about a 17 year old girl Gabriella (Ella) and I feel that with some of the things that happen to her that there is no reason she has to be 17, other than she is young and naive. Bad things continue to happen to Gabriella. Most of In The Shadows is set in the UK. I don't know the laws there but, can underage kids drink legally because Gabriella sure did a lot of that as well as clubbing?
I also have several other thoughts & questions. What was the tragedy Nick suffered? What was the significance of his tattoo? Why bring up his drawer of toys and kink if it's not going to come up in the story? And what was the purpose of giving us the kinky info on Alex's dad?
Warning: there is a lot of HOT Sex, non consensual and otherwise. There is sex with a minor so if you don't like that be wary. I would have given 4 stars if Ella had not been 17. All in all
I will definitely read the next book in this series. And I need to find out more about Liv and yes you have to read "In the Shadows" so that you will know about Liv. ;)
This ARC was received for an honest review.
