From the Inside Flap

In this original, wide-ranging, and endlessly thought-provoking work of popular nonfiction, a leading science writer uncovers the pervasive presence of shadows in our world.
For Plato, shadows were the symbol of our limitations. For Galileo, they knocked the Earth from the center of the cosmos. They are a source of fear and a symbol of ignorance, and they loom large in art and design, mythology and folklore, physics and metaphysics, and architecture and urban planning. From shadows puppets and the psychology of shadows to the role of shadows in astronomy and the influence of shadows on the architectural profiles of our cities, Roberto Casati awakens our fascination in this tour-de-force of investigation and imagination.

Format: Paperback
Casati's book SHADOWS is just brilliant - if you're a painter, a photographer, a writer, a musician, an historian, an armchair scholar, an academician, a philosopher, an astronomer, a mathematician, any or all of the above, this book will fascinate you -- and your perspective on the world around you will change. You'll be looking everywhere for shadows, examining whether or not they reveal or hide the true nature of objects (is the moon actually a luminescent globe in the sky or is it a huge rock? Think of it with the sun's light on it, then think of it during a full eclipse.)You'll be considering shadow as metaphor, thinking about shadow as the beginning point for many explorations into fields of science and art. A truly absorbing book, wholeheartedly recommended.

Format: Paperback
It was hard to move beyond how Casati interprets Plato's cave allegory. The shadows there are a metaphor for mass-media/public relations/or propaganda's effect on the collective psyche. In mass societies we are conditioned to be mass men. Unfortunately, Casati thinks shadows in a fabricated reality can, if studied, reveal the reality that Plato was getting at, which is that mass-man is molded without knowing he is molded, and that is not logical.

Casati is taking Plato's use of shadows literally, and unfortunately it's at the beginning of the book.
