Editorial Reviews

Review

"Shadows among the Ruins is a fast-paced and old-school fun mystery read, highly recommended."
--Midwest Book Review

"This 'who-done-it' has cops, a surprise ending, great dialog, and stunning vistas. This is the kind of book to dive into in front of a fire or to take on a plane and tune everything out."
--Tradicion Revista Magazine"

"Marie Romero Cash writes about Santa Fe with a local's razor-sharp insights, and peoples her exciting mystery with a gallery of colorful, authentic New Mexico characters. The plot moves with the speed and force of a Southwestern thunderstorm."
--Kirk Ellis, Co-Executive Producer/Screenwriter, HBO's John Adams
"Shadows among the Ruins is a great read whose real characters and honest dialog capture the intrigue of New Mexico. Throw in a great plot with a surprise ending, and mystery lovers will be clamoring for the sequel. Marie Romero Cash has taken the gift for prose she demonstrated in Lowrider Blues and applied it to the mystery genre with spectacular results."
--J. Michael Orenduff, Author, The Pot Thief Murder Mystery Series
"Shadows among the Ruins will compel some Southwestern mystery writers take another look at their own work. Marie Cash made me sit up and take notice. Her come-along plot made me miss dinner, but it was worth it. Now, after I get something to eat, I'm going to read it again. You have to like this book."
--Forrest Fenn, Santa Fe resident and owner of San Lazaro Pueblo, the setting for Shadows. He has written eight books on history, art, and archaeology.

About the Author

Marie Romero Cash was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to a family that would eventually number seven children, and has lived there most of her life. After graduating from Santa Fe High School, she took a job as a legal secretary, a field that would provide a lifetime of employment. But then, in her mid-thirties, she discovered the traditional arts of northern New Mexico. After twenty years of creating award-winning art, she began to write about it, but decided she needed a higher education to do so. At fifty she enrolled in college and, five years later, graduated with a degree in Southwest Studies. In 1998, she received the prestigious Javits Fellowship to pursue her education.  Since then Marie has written several books about the art and culture of the southwest, including a memoir about growing up in Santa Fe. This novel, her first mystery, is based on the ranch where she spent a lot of time during her marriage to a cowboy. “Don’t get me wrong,” she says, “I’m the last person you would ever picture on a ranch. The alligator boots I purchased in 1987 still look like new!” You can find Marie on the Web at MarieRomeroCash.camelpress.com.

Shadows among the Ruins is a good read. Set in the American Southwest, the novel uses the landscape as a character. The author knows how to pace a mystery, how to develop suspense, how to build a backstory and she's not afraid of a little blood. This isn't a cozy, but a hard hitting, dynamic piece of writing. The killer, who shall remain unnamed, is a good adversary for the introspective sleuth, a lapsed Mormon called Jemimah. The novel is full of such surprises in the story line, in the characters and in the writing. I liked the epilogue in Brazil but won't spoil it for you. This sleuth in her landscape deserves a series. I hope the author brings her back for more death and mayhem. Buy it. Read it.

Marie Romero Cash's debut mystery, Shadows Among the Ruins is a terrific read from beginning to end, heralding the arrival of a great new mystery writer of the calibre of Mary Higgins Clark. Cash's heroine, Jemima Thorpe is a fully-developed multidimensional character, entirely believable as a forensic psychiatrist/cowgirl, gutsy and brainy, wise and appealing. Together with Deputy McDreamy
[Sheriff's Deputy Rick Romero] Jemima deals with the discovery of four decomposing victims of grisly murders and solves the heinous crimes, uncovering a vengeful sociopath and bringing about her arrest. The author's narrative is fast-moving and reads beautifully, combining the unique beauty of Santa Fe's surroundings with the dark side of life around the Turquoise Trail. I'll be looking forward to reading many more mysteries by this outstanding new author. And, soon.

The plot was good. The descriptions of the southwest were wonderful, except they kept cropping up at inopportune times. In the middle of being marched at gunpoint to likely be murdered, the author stops to describe the scenery. Also, I believe she has confused characterization with past history. We learn details of the past lives of almost all the characters, but they actually aren't fleshed out very well. Several of the characters behave in unlikely manners. Ms. Cash has promise, but she needs a writers' group or a mentor to help her reach her potential.

I was unable to finish this book. I bought it because of the description of the protagonist being a woman and she is hardly even mentioned in the story before I gave up. It is supposed to be about a serial killer but we are quite a ways into the story before the killings are even mentioned and then it comes from the man's boss as in: aren't you doing anything about the killings? Then we get a description of who's been killed. I gave up on this book and regret buying them all together.

Shadows among the Ruins is a well-written mystery. I love the development of the characters, especially Paul. You see his weaknesses and his strengths and his growing feelings for the young female marshal. Ms. Cash did a splendid job in writing a good plot and developing the story will look forward to her next book.

The first 10 chapters, were like reading 10 short stories without a beginning, middle or end. This woman needs to get her storyline down, she's all over the place. I couldn't take anymore, I quit. Now I'm just trying to find how to delete it off my Kindle.

Marie Romero Cash's "Shadows among the Ruins" was a fun read. I very much like her female sleuth, and I found all the characters to be believable and interesting. I didn't find a false note in the entire book; it's as if the author had been writing mysteries for a long time. It's not an easy transition to switch to mystery writing. I am looking forward to the next books in the series! Long live Jemima!

This book had great unmet potential. It's like it was written by four different people who never spoke to one another. Many of the plot lines were just left hanging, or introduced and then never mentioned again. And who is the main character? I bought the first three and will probably read them all just to see if anything is cleared up and if the characters ever get fleshed out...
There is even confusion over which book is the third in the series. Needs serious editing and continuity help.
