4.0 out of 5 stars Rare and very cool. Not just rehashed old stuff
By A. Ellis on March 29, 2021
I have loved Private Eyes for years. What this is folks is basically a 45 minute cassette tape of test mixes for Private Eyes. More than likely in my opinion something made to get a feel for the album while in progress. Imagine it was an unlabeled type 1 cassette tape that was in a coffee can since Tommy made it and someone just discovered it. The amount of tape hiss they removed is remarkable. You can hear it during the fades a lot. Heck, this could even be a tape Tommy made for himself, to play along with. Yeah, there are cassette tape artifacts, but have you ever heard these before? No.

The first track, Shake the Devil is very close to what you hear on the final LP with some additional guitar at the end.

Bustin Out For Rosey has no rhythm guitar at all. The first half of the guitar solo is definitely not the final take.

Hello Again either has a completely different vocal take, or had parts changed later in the process. It is just acoustic guitar and tommy singing.

Gypsy Soul#1 sounds VERY close to the final LP but the vocals sit higher in the mix in spots, the Latin percussion in the end is louder too in spots. Longer fade out. Probably not a final mix but pretty close.

Sweet Burgundy has almost no guitar(rhythm acoustic chords low in the mix) and the vocals are dry, little reverb or anything. This one sounds like the tape was in rougher shape.

Someday will Bring Our Love Home is really great. Just rhythm tracks, no electric guitar. You can really hear what the song is made of. Sounds like the final track otherwise.

You Told Me That You Loved Me is like a lot of the other tracks. It is just rhythm tracks. They sound like the final tracks you hear on the album. No vocals, almost no lead guitar and almost no electric guitar at all. This one actually has an outright electric guitar solo that isn’t the final one on the album

Post Toastee is what you’d call a writing demo. Probably on a 4 track. Just Tommy singing along with a guitar that sounds like an electric plugged right into the recorder. Definitely not the final lyrics

Tommy’s Instrumental is pretty much just rhythm tracks, with electric guitar, some soloing. Has a lot of aspects of other Tommy songs in some key passages and structures

Gypsy Soul #2. Tommy singing and an acoustic guitar. None from the final album. True definition of a demo for the song

Gypsy Soul #3 sounds like Tommy teaching the song to the bass player. Sounds like one electric guitar and one bass plugged right into a 4 track. Interesting Overdubbed guitar solo some bends you don’t normally hear Tommy do. Very cool.

Someday Will Bring Our Love Home brings it home of course. Sounds to be from the same little session as Gypsy Soul #3. Electric guitar and bass sound to be plugged right into a tape recorder and then Tommy did some light electric guitar overdubs. Tommy gets a little country at the end of the song. Very tasty. Gotta wonder if those two tracks are hotel room demos. Keeping it quiet. No amps, no distortion.

But then at the end of the tape, Tommy counts in 4 and demonstrates the chords. Sounds like good old fashioned “overloading the tape” distortion.

Is this a must? No, it’s for completists. But it is cool.
