I bought the Spiderman version of this rod and reel combo for my 4-1/2 year old for around $14. My kids was so excited to get it, and it has totally gotten him into fishing. The set comes with a 2.5-foot rod and baitcast reel. All of the Shakespeare children's rod/reel combos are the same - Disney Princess, Mickey, Cars, Toy Story, Star Wars, etc.), although some of them include a tackle kit with hooks, lures, etc.

This is a great value for the price. The reel comes pre-wound with 6-lb. test monofilament fishing line. It is a great combo for catching panfish (sunfish, blue gills, crappies, pumpkinseeds, etc.) from a dock or a boat. Some kids have caught huge lunkers with these rods. The kit comes with a rubber plug for practice casting. After some practice, my kid was casting 50-60 feet, and it is a serviceable combo even for an adult.

However, there are no instructions to be found on the package or online, and these reels are prone to tangle if you don't know what you are doing.

Here is what I would do:

(1) The hole in the practice plug is going to tear. Reinforce it with some superglue or duct tape. Don't glue the hole closed!

(2) Be sure to adjust the drag (the plus-minus dial on the reel) to a light setting. You should hear some clicking when you pull on the line, and there should be just enough tension so you definitely feel it, but not enough that it is significantly harder to pull out line. If your kid gets a fish on the line, you might need to quickly increase the drag to tire the fish and make sure you don't run out of line. The drawback of spincast reels is that they don't hold much line, and these are smaller reels.

I gave this a one star, but it would have been minus ten if I could have. Yes, it is cheap, but if you are going to buy it, save yourself the hassle of waiting for it...flush your cash down the toilet instead. It did not properly work, ever, even the very first time. And guess when it comepletely broke and fell apart? The second time of use. I have had many cheap fishing rods for my kids, and have never seen one that behaved as badly as this one. My rating is BOO-HISS.

We love these kid fishing poles! They aren't very sturdy and rust pretty easily in FL, but they are such a great size and so much fun for little kids! We take our kids fishing often (a few times a month at least) so they get lots of use out of them. They are so affordable that when they rust or break or get pulled under by a fish (happened twice now) we just buy a new one! We love these! I do wish they had an option for the exposed fishing line to help the rust issue...

Looks cute and my 4yr old lovez it. However, he cannot use it to fish with as it does not reel in ANY WEIGHT AT ALL! The drag is set at the max and it still doesnt reel in the tiny sinker I put on! Perfect for a boy wanting to walk around with it but any tension on the line at all, doesnt reel in. Only way to get a fish in with this pole is by going hand over hand. Save your money folks!

We needed this quickly, so I got it from a local store instead of my favorite Amazon. It is totally worthless!!! Drag was not adjustable, couldn't reel in, and couldn't even get the plastic cover to screw back on after trying to adjust it. It goes back to the store and we will get something else. Worst piece of junk I've ever seen. I would give it minus stars if I could.

My kids are 7 and 5 and they were just learning how to fish and the line kept getting caught and tangled inside reel. So if your kids are learning how to fish, I do not recommend this pole, however if they have fished before and know what they are doing then you may get by with this one. I went to a store and purchased 3 poles with different kind of reel for my kids and they worked better for them.... I was disappointed in these.

This is the most amazing combo I've ever used. I've landed several world record bass on this combo and I roundhouse kicked Kevin Vandam in a tournament using this Rod and reel. The lights inside of it really get your spidey senses tingling. On a side note: KVD gets kinda butthurt when you beat him on his home lake.

Will reel in, but won't cast. I haven't been fishing in a few years and was setting this up for my kid, so we could go. After slinging the practice lure straight into the ground a few times, I thought perhaps I had lost the ability to cast a line. Had to bring out one of my own rigs to prove to myself I still had it, Anyway, this thing is junk.
