Hi. I'm John Matthews. I've written nearly a 150 books over the last 40 years or so. Books about many things. Pirates, King Arthur and the Grail Quest, Faeries, Robin Hood,Spring-Heeled Jack, and many more. I love folklore, history and film and I recently began writing for movies and TV, creating documentaries, TV scripts and motion pictures. I have also created 13 divinatory systems, tarots etc and have worked with some of the finest artists in the world, including Brian Froud, Charles Vess, Will Worthington, Andre Aste and Wil Kinghan. I have also written many books with my partner Caitlin Matthews, with whom I sometimes think I share a brain, and who knows what I'm thinking before I think it. I was going to put a picture of my cat Willow here, but i guess you might rather see me. I recently began to write books for younger readers, including graphic novels and the fabulous StoryWorld series. This year (2018) set the publication of the first in a series of long planned novels about the young King Arthur and his education by Merlin. Its called The Sword of Ice and Fire, the first of a quartet with the overall title Red Dragon Rising. Even after so many books I still felt a real thrill when the author's copies arrived on my desk. Writing so many books has always been hard work and it continues to be so, but I love the act of creation and cannot imagine ever doing anything else. I'm greatful to all the countless people who have read my books, especially those who made my book on Pirates a New York Times best seller in 2006. There are many more books to come, so I hope you'll keep reading, and keep pestering your booksellers to stock them!

The premise of the deck is that you are connecting to the spirits or getting in touch with how our ancestors viewed the world and while this is obviously not precisely how they did it it does a great job at connecting you to some ancient concepts. Also, there are two cards that will always be face up: one that represents you and one that represents your spiritual companion, so you don't shuffle all of the cards like in tarot. I also think it's generally intended to always use a five card spread in the shape of a hand with each point being a different "cave" where you interpret each card based both on the card's meaning and which cave it falls into. So, it's not really designed for a variety of spreads like tarot either if I'm understanding correctly. I imagine you could experiment with that though and see what works.
As for the imagery on the cards, I think they're great. It's true that some of the images are dark, so you'll want good lighting with these, but I wouldn't say they're impossible to make out. They were taken in caves and touched up a bit by way of explanation but I think it adds some gravity to the cards personally.
So, I've done one reading so far and liked the message I got - it seemed appropriate to my question.
This deck in NOT a Rider Waite Smith clone. The images and meanings are totally different but still useful and the meanings are fairly clear.

That and shamanism itself, which I always loved, being someone closely connected to (my) nature.
I am excited to explore and play with them. They arrived on a very auspicious day, on this magical new moon.
The only thing I disliked was the inner box; the last cards got stuck in it so I simply removed it.
Even so, that does not diminish this deck's value and quality in any way.
Thank You for this beautiful work.
Deep and good for spiritual work, not an everyday deck which make them more sacred.
Love it!
