I never betrayed my friend.
Last year, I was kidnapped along with presidential candidate’s daughter Lindsay Bosworth, forced to help her assailants, my mother implicated in one of the biggest political scandals in American history.
I've been cleared of any wrongdoing, but that doesn’t matter. Once you’re tried by the media, you’re guilty as sin. The truth doesn’t get the public’s attention.
But shame? Shame sells.
And everyone assumes you’re tainted.
Now I have my own personal security team, courtesy of the United States government. Not the one you learned about in civics class, though.
I’m being tracked by the deep state. The shadow government. They’ve assigned Silas Gentian to be with me twenty-four seven. He thinks he knows everything about me – all of it bad -- and he does.
On paper.
Like everyone else, he assumes I’m a traitor. A backstabber. A betrayer. Someone who helped a group of violent psychopaths, puppets of powerful men in Washington who made me into a tool.
Yet I see how he looks at me. True desire can’t be faked.
Or hidden.
And that goes both ways.
He assumes I’m trying to fool him.
And he might be right.
But not for the reasons he thinks.

I only gave this book 3 out of 5 stars because it is really confusing. It doesnt say there is a series before this that you should read to get the whole story, and this is book 1 in shameless series.
I believe it would have been better to have one series and just add numbers to them instead of dividing it into different series that are actually kind of dependant on each other to grasp the story from beginning to the end.
But I did like the characters and this story. The author is good att description and keeping it interesting, so I have just bought book 2 and will continue reading since it was quite the cliff hanger in the end!
There is nude, and steamy kissing but no sex, so if you just want a erotik book this is not the book to read (might come in the next book though). Otherwise i can recomment this book to anyone in the mood for a slow burn, dramatic book with intrigues.
I will be honest. I downloaded this book because of the cover. I hadn't read the blurb before reading it. Many of my book friends had read this series and said I would like it. (I just wish someone told me to read the previous series that came before this one.)
Truth: I am still a little lost at some of the things in this book. I am sure after reading the Harmless books and then the other two books in this series, that will change. That being said, this book had me hooked from page one. I couldn't stop reading from the get go. The story-line is so engaging, I found myself flying through it.
The characters are completely likable and not so likable, as the case may be. The author does a great job at letting you know the characters enough to feel who they are and their connections with one another. There interactions and connections are felt with ease from start to finish.
I can't wait to see what comes of all of the puzzle pieces once I make my way through all of the books. I am addicted to what exactly did happen and what didn't happen. Who did what? Who is innocent? Who is guilty? I am looking forward to knowing all of the answers!
This is actually a continuation of the story begun in the Harmless series. The storyline and all the characters are the same. The primary difference is that while the Harmless books dwell on Lindsay and Drew's story, this switches the main protagonists to Jane and Silas. The way this story flows so flawlessly and the meticulous consistency with the Harmless series just blows me away and is, unfortunately, rare in this genre where I often find inconsistencies within a single story (or even within a single chapter) from some other authors. The characters are so well developed and the storyline so intricately woven that, had I not read so many of Meli Raine's other books/series, I would be even more amazed by her capacity than I am. I have come to expect this from her books and have not yet been disappointed.
The only con I can raise is that this is Book 1 of another trilogy and it ends on a cliffhanger (as I have no doubt, Book 2 will, as well). If you don't like that scenario, my best advice is to save/wish list this first book until June 2018 when the final book is scheduled to be released and then read the entire trilogy without interruption. In the meantime, if you haven't yet read the Harmless trilogy (which is complete), absolutely read those stories first. Although I imagine there is enough background in this book that you can get a Cliff Notes' understanding of the background, it's so much better having read the entire set.
And a plea to those of you who trash review individual books in a series because they are not standalone, STOP IT (or at least give the book the star value it deserves). You do a great disservice to potential readers who look to reviews to decide whether to read the book(s). And that's the only reason to write reviews - to help others to make informed decisions.

This time, comparing the story to the one before, I realised why - besides deep characters and complex plots - her books are so gripping. Fairy tales, they say, teach children that you can beat the monsters. By mixing romance with brutal political thrillers, Raine tells us something deeper: you can beat the monsters with love.
Her heroines aren't rescued by a prince: that would leave them still victims, just lucky victims. Their prince's love helps them find the strength to rescue themselves, and we are all empowered by their victories.

This book / series is Jane & Sila's story...Jane is the friend of Lindsay from the Harmless series and Sila's was Drew's friend and employee bodyguard.
Jane has been ousted and Sila's is to be with her 24/7 and the drama begins......

The plot kept me on the edge of my seat.
Jane is a brilliant character, caught in a web that has her life taken out of her control.
The characters are well written with great detail and care.
i loved this book and highly recommend it
