Cicily has recently been rescued after being kidnapped and tortured by indians, and is forced to live with Edith, an awful woman in town who is the only one available to help her. When Shane goes to bring her back out of the woods after she runs away again, they get to talking and he offers her a place as housekeeper.
Because this book has almost all positive reviews I felt it was my duty to let people know my negative opinion. This book was terrible. The characters were shallow, the romance hardly anything to speak of, the plot was almost non-existent and there were so many things that just made no sense at all, while the story meandered from one scene to the next as I waited for something interesting to happen. One of the characters is a former slave and she's one of the nastiest snobs I've read about in years, totally unrealistic. No one who lived through slavery is going to be as snobbish, nasty and cold hearted as this character. Characters come and go and are used as plot device characters and once they aren't need anymore they're just disappear, I mean they literally disappear. Cicily woke up one morning and two people were just gone. On top of that are the numerous historical inaccuracies, such as buying mattresses when people would have slept on either feather or straw, using shotguns and shells which weren't invented, and a totally one denominational look at native Americans and a slaves. Not only that but the characters of Edith and Lucy are so over the top nasty as to be ridiculous and also make the book a chore to read. I don't want to read about nasty squabbling witches, who also happen to suddenly turn nice when it suits the story. Not to mention that the whole set up of Cicily coming to live with Shane doesn't make much sense. It was never spelled out what her place in his home was, was she a partner, a servant, what? Not only that, but what about Lucy's place? She was a guest, and yet Shane refused to treat her as such. The whole book took place in a gray area of unreality. Also, Shane was complicit with much of Edith and Lucy's behavior. He didn't stand up for her when he should have. It doesn't matter how he felt about her, he should have stood up for anyone under his protection.
The Sum Up:
It's poorly researched and under developed and with so many better books out there don't waste your time on this one. It started strong, but it went down hill fast. I hate books where almost every single female character in the book is nasty, other than the heroine. On top of that, the historical inaccuracy, so many unlikable characters and a plot that meanders means that I couldn't recommend this book to anyone.
