Product Description
Shantae embarks on her first full HD adventure! After three highly successful outings with Shantae, Shantae: Risky's Revenge, and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Shantae and her friends finally get a full HD console-based sequel! Boasting vivid, detailed high-definition graphics that retain the 2D hand-drawn sprites the series is known for, this newest entry in the Shantae series almost looks like a playable TV show! Presented as a stage-based 2.5D platformer with heavy exploration elements, Shantae uses her trademark Hair-Whip Attack to dispatch enemies, then takes advantage of her Belly Dance Magic to transform into 8 different forms that each have their own unique abilities and move sets. As new forms are mastered, old stages can be re-explored to unearth new items and secrets, ensuring there's plenty of content on offer for novices and platforming gurus alike. Topple the villainous Baron behind each criminal caper afflicting Sequin Land, and prepare for the ultimate showdown against Shantae's arch-nemesis: that bodacious buccaneer, Risky Boots!

[Combat]
It's been awhile since I've said this about a 2D platformer; but the combat was actually decent. You'll be able to use magic or melee; and they both served different purposes. In the earlier levels, you'll be able to get away with using just your melee attack, but as time goes on; you'll be better off incorporating magic into your arsenal, especially for those hard to reach enemies. Although I enjoyed the combat; there was one rather useless mechanic that I later unlocked. I forget the name of the move; but it was a backward dash used to 'avoid' enemy attacks. I placed an emphasis on avoid because I was never successful, lol!
[Weaponry]
As a famous hip hop artist once said: "long hair don't care."So yeah, Shantae's weapon of choice is her gorgeous ponytail! I'll be the first to admit that I was a bit skeptical about using hair as a weapon for quite a few reasons that I don't have time to delve into. However, slapping fools with Shantae's ponytail could not have been more fulfilling! For starters, she has a decent amount of range. Once you start adding upgrades; that head of hair becomes powerful enough to kill enemies with just one whip! Shantae's diverse; so she doesn't just solely rely on her hair as a weapon. You'll be able to unlock several magic attacks for her to use. In all honesty, I'm not much of a magic attack guy (regardless of the game) so I limited myself to using only one or two magic attacks (mainly the fireballs and electricity), but the option is still nice to have.
[Enemies]
With enemies; all I ask is for every level to introduce new enemy types, and this game delivered. I'm not saying I didn't see some of the enemies more than once, because I did. What I AM saying is each level had its own 'theme', and most of the enemies reflected that theme. As for their difficulty; I never really felt threatened by the regular enemies (especially once I upgraded my health). The bosses on the other hand? Some of them were an entirely different story! I don't want to give any spoilers, but the last boss was pretty tricky; but never frustrating. That's really the theme of the entire game: Tricky at times; but never frustrating.
[Miscellaneous]
I rarely; and I mean RARELY care about a game's soundtrack. As a pre-order bonus, I received a CD with several soundtracks on it. I had a chance to listen to it, and one song stood out. I don't know the name of it, but it's track #2 (I'm far from being the only person that likes that song). I'm not familiar with the artist (Shantae perhaps?); but whoever it is, she can sing her ass off; and that's a fact! My car is old enough to still have a CD player, so I'm sure you know what track I'm bumpin', don't you? The many collectibles throughout the game greatly contributes to its 5 star rating. In order to find the collectibles; Shantae is aided by her many 'transformations', such as an elephant, an adorable monkey, a spider, a mermaid, a crab, a bat, and my personal favorite; the harpy! Each transformation has its own special talent such as the monkey's ability to climb walls, and the harpy's ability to fly, and so on and so forth.
I had a great time with the game, and I felt compelled to replay a few of the levels (something I never do). As much as I adore the gameplay, I realize it may not be for everyone because there's a ton of backtracking involved. The one thing I didn't like was how easy the non-boss enemies were. With that being said, it's not enough to detract from the gameplay. And, I finished it in around 12 hours (taking my time), for what it's worth. Gravity Rush 2; you're up next!
Shantae games have always been a mix of adventure and platforming with an open world to explore. They had downgraded that to just short platforming levels in the vien of the mega man x series, but not as fun.
The developers decided this time to pack in so many transformations that it doesnt work well. There is a thing called less is more and it would have worked better having less abilities to work with than an abundance and making almost every transformation a gimick. Some of the transformations dont really have a use and or if you get a new one it can make an older transformation useless. Ie spider, bat when you get harpy.
Besides having too many transformations the developers decided to waste kickstarter money by adding items that doesnt need to be there or should never be there. Ie fish transformation, jem pot, tree transformation. There are too many healing items in this game. Buy potions from item shop, besides hearts 3 different healing items drop from monsters (eggs, steak, oranges), healing dance. Why the need for so many healing items which then makes the point of either purchasing potions obsolete when you can get it just from drops or dance. This isnt a long adventure game its a short platformer like mega man. Mega man had e-tanks. One healing item.
The other useless items that the developers added was power ups to certain transformations that will never be used or have a purpose on using. For example the bat transformation can only fly straight but they felt very late in the game to give it a sonic shooting power. The bat only fly striaght in a platformer game that requires jumps this power is not useful or would even be used. Also giving the mouse ability bite power up and the spider a venom shot. Its a complete waste of kickstarter money which should have been put elsewhere in the game. Make another level since there is only 7 world levels. Or they should have added more dance animations. In this game she only has 1. If you have played the previous games you know dancing has always been a part of the characters personality and transformations with multiple dances. Its just another thing to me that makes the game more bland and just off compared to the previous games.
Another downside to this game than other shantae games is there are zero dungeons in this game. None. Just short platform levels.
This game could have been something better if it didnt feel like a watered down mess of the previous games. The developers should have stuck with less transformations and focused more on the powers they had. Also focus more on the story which i find this one to be less appealing or entertaining maybe because the adventure is no longer there or maybe because the other characters have less focus on this game. Having dungeons with puzzles to solve would be a big improvement than just small platform segments.
Another downside to this game is the bland boss fights. As well as the easy 100 percenting the game. This is the very first of the shantae games that i got 100 percent with out even getting stuck having to look anything up. Since the levels are so short its easy to find everything all it takes is to question the short map areas on where you havent been.
If you are new to the shantae series and wonder which game to play. Play pirates curse. Yes there is no transformation in that game but it is the best in the series for doing everything so right. And its fun.
