Product Description
Shantae and her friends are coming to Nintendo Switch in full HD with tons of new content in the form of the 'Ultimate Edition,' containing all the DLC! In addition to the bevy of vivid, detailed high-definition graphics that made this newest entry in the Shantae series resemble a playable TV show as Shantae danced and transformed her way through 2.5D platforming action, the 'Pirate Queen's Quest' DLC allows players to take on the role of Shantae' s arch-nemesis, Risky Boots, in a whole new storyline! The 'Friends to the End' DLC features ethereal new levels and a special boss encounter as Shantae' s pals Sky, Bolo, and Rottytops enter her nightmare to try to save her from certain doom, while the 'Costume Mode' DLC provides three new arcade-style adventures for her to sashay her way through in style.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero – Ultimate Edition
In the beautiful, magical world of Sequin Land lives a spirited young half-genie named Shantae. Gifted with a special ability to belly-dance and transform herself into various creature forms (not to mention the most powerful ponytail in the world!), Shantae has dedicated her life to defending Scuttle Town from evil in its many forms! So far she’s kept her home safe from steam-powered pirates, undead evildoers, and militaristic madmen, proving time and again that there’s nothing this genie-girl can’t handle.
However, as certain as the rising tides, Scuttle Town is about to fall victim to another nefarious scheme by the pirate captain and self-proclaimed Queen of the Seven Seas, Risky Boots! No citizen of Sequin land is safe!
Shantae’s invention-obsessed uncle has just discovered a new and limitless source of power by mixing magic with magnetism – a power that Risky Boots wants all for herself! But that’s not all: villainy is on the rise all across Sequin Land, and our poor Shantae can’t be everywhere at once. Is she hero enough to topple this wave of criminal masterminds and still make time to foil Risky’s latest scheme?
Join Shantae as she adventures through steamy jungles, ancient ruins, counterfeit mermaid factories (what?), stormy deserts, ghoulish graveyards, and much, much more, all while struggling to unlock the long-lost secrets of her genie heritage. Can Shantae save Sequin Land once again? Or will Risky Boots finally succeed in ruling the world? All is not as it seems in this latest, greatest Shantae adventure!
Shantae and her friends are coming to Nintendo Switch in full HD.

The game spans multiple multi-layered stages that are less about platforming prowess and more about exploration. It takes inspiration from games that follow Metroid's design philosophies and injects them into more straightforward levels. You'll find many power-ups and abilities that will help you on your journey, the most important of these being the transformations. Activating a transformation (which is done by dancing to a rhythmic beat that determines which one you can choose) will allow you turn into anything from a wall-climbing monkey, to a boulder-busting elephant. Knowing when and where to use a specific transformation is part of what makes this game a joy to play, as each creature plays completely different from one another. Collecting every hidden item in this game will require a keen understanding of how each transformation can be used.
Half-Genie Hero, as with each Shantae game before it, is whimsically charming, devilishly funny, and endlessly entertaining. The story, while simple, carries and paces itself brilliantly so that it feels like you are actually progressing, rather than meandering senselessly.
Beating the game will take the average player about 8 hours or so just for the main story. However, trying to 100% the game will certainly take even those with more experience at least twice as long, as the hidden items and abilities are cunningly hidden (but never in such a way that you feel cheated). Along with this, the other game modes will certainly add a considerable amount of enjoyment. You will absolutely get your money's worth from the breadth of options made on offer.
If you're coming into this as a fan of the series, you will feel right at home, even if the game plays in a much more straightforward, left-to-right fashion. If you're looking for a way to get into the series, this is the perfect place (though, you cannot go wrong with any of them).
Now for the package, it comes with the physical game, an art booklet, and a limited edition soundtrack. Considering the music in this game is above average to catchy/great, it's a nice inclusion. The music in the game is about what you'd expect from the series, except going for a more clean sound to match the 2.5D cartoon styled graphics - as opposed to the pixel are of past games. Speaking of the art, the art boot that comes with the game here is surprisingly substantial. Sketches, concepts, and character profiles - all in a thicker than expected booklet. The print isn't the sharpest you'll see, but it still looks sharp. The most pleasant surprise is the presence of a game manual - in the game itself.
Long have we learned to never expect a manual, and only a few cards or something. But no, within the package, you ALSO get a full manual with graphics and game controls inside. A nice throwback, apparently something Wayforward is known for doing, and shooting for in physical releases for games.
All is contained neatly in a cardboard box, organized well with a cardboard divider to keep things in order inside.
In summation: If you're a fan of this series, it's a must buy. If you're a game collector, it's a must buy for the value and content you get. If you're a fan of platformers and the art style catches your eye, it's a must buy (for the price). If you're not, still consider it, because as a package, it's one of the best values you'll find on the Switch right now in terms of content and gameplay. It's a little casual, so you won't sweat playing through - however it's a quirky and charming title you likely won't regret picking up.
The visual design of the box, soundtrack, art book, and game case are all very nice, and very good quality. Be warned though that my box came in a bit dented on the corners. I didn't mind enough to send it back but if you want this for a collection or you're very particular about the condition of your game boxes then you may want to consider buying in-person instead.
A very good product barring that one exception.

This Limited Edition includes three items: Game (complete in case with manual), soundtrack CD, and an artbook.
* The game itself is a very solid platformer. The hand-drawn animation is simply gorgeous. There isn't much to say. If you enjoyed previous Shantae games (or similar games such as Shovel Knight), then this game is a must play!
* The cartridge comes in a standard Switch case. Nothing to write home about. What did catch my eye was in the instruction manual. Most current gen games no longer include these, but it's great that Shantae and other physical indie games are trying their best to keep the tradition alive. Of course, the game itself is the exact same as the Ultimate Edition available on the eShop. What's also great is that the DLC is on the cartridge itself. No download tied to the game, and no download code provided in a piece of paper. This is convenient in case I ever want to lend the game to a friend, as they'll be able to play all of it.
* I won't be using the soundtrack CD since I don't have a CD player or a disc reader on my laptop. That said, it's still nice to have it sealed as a collector's item.
* The artbook is by far my favourite item (and my reason for buying this). It's not big. It's about as wide as the game case's height, and about as tall as the entire box it comes in. I flipped through it. Lots of goodies in there including sketches, uncoloured drawings, and full page artworks. There's also a dancing Shantae in the bottom left corner if you choose to use the artbook as a flipbook. One thing I noticed is that the cover of the artbook isn't completely flat. Shantae is slightly lifted from the cover, which is a nice little detail.
All in all, this is a solid package. One of the cheaper collector's editions I've come across and well worth the money for what you get.
