Arguably the most influential hardcore album of all time, "The Shape of Punk To Come" was Refused's masterpiece, their last recording, and the record that launched a new generation of hardcore bands. Now fans can explore the album in a new light with an added CD containing over 50 minutes of unreleased live performances and a DVD documenting their first US tour and ensuing demise.
"This is an album of punk finality, of defiant, left-wing independence....When in range, Refused are as impossible to ignore as they are to deny." 4 stars out of 5 --Mojo

First off the video was insanely good and secondly the music was phenomenal! So I went over to a listening station and was completely won over by the thick guitar sounds, screaming vocals and experimental approach — something I'd never quite experienced to this degree in a hardcore album. I immediately grabbed a copy and the rest is history.
Recently I found out that Refused had reunited and released a new album, I'll admit I checked out the first single and really like it, but to be totally honest the first thought that crossed my mind was, 'I bet The Shape Of Punk To Come will be available on vinyl.' I immediately went to record stores in Taipei but didn't find it anywhere, I then tried Amazon, and bingo!
I have to say that this album must have been intended to be listened on vinyl, it sounds so much better with the warm pops and scratches that only vinyl can produce. As for this vinyl itself the lead outs are pretty noisy, but far from destroying the experience I find this only enhances it — since this record is noisy — I really can't imagine it any other way!
I was pretty blown away by all the extras, not only does this record contain 2 thick 180 gram vinyls, but also a little poster, the album on CD and a Refused are F***ing Dead DVD, so why bother with any other format, this ones got it all and more!
A lot of people say that The Shape of Punk To Come blends hardcore with metal, but to be honest I don't see the metal connection, personally I think it is simply hardcore with a very experimental attitude, everything from street poetry to jazz, soft and gentle to hard and grating — all the while always remaining catchy. You really can't help but turn it up and move to it.
Another thing is there has always been this question of, "was this the shape of punk to come?" Sadly I'd say unfortunately not, I've never heard anything even close to this record since, with the exception of perhaps Sing The Sorrow which is possibly the last great experimental punk/hardcore record I've heard since — heard something better let me know.
In conclusion I'd say that regardless of your punk preference, you won't be sorry to have this in your collection regardless of the format — but that said, you really can't go wrong with the vinyl.
You can get the gist of what this album is from the other reviews, I merely offer a vote of support. To put it in perspective, after I listened to it over and over again for months I moved. And lost the dvd. And dropped and broke my ipod. After not being able to find it on emusic I am willing to yet again drop over $12 to have it again.
If you like hardcore but INNOVATIVE punk pay for it, if you don't have money then pirate it. But listen to this, seriously.
