The story begins in a back room of a bordello, dropping us into the final painful, tragic, and inevitable death throes of a mother who is experiencing a foreshortened lifetime of tending to the health of those she lives and works with. Her daughter and assistant, Anna, and the bordello's madam have watched in the passing years as her healer's compulsion to always heal when her gift is needed used up the well within her where she stores all variety of harmful things (toxins, illness, and injury) that she has eased out of her clients in order to cure them. Having no healer's gift, Anna has been making preparations to leave after her mother passes on. She has some vague idea that she will look for a mentor/teacher to help her with her own undeveloped gift which she is under great pressure to keep undercover. In the day after her mother passes, Anna makes her final farewells and goes to the local stables to purchase the best horse that her paltry stash will allow. There is almost no choice unless she spends money waiting for the trade caravans to show up so she looks at the two horses on offer. One would likely not make it much past the city gates before breaking down but the other is both frightening for it's quality and for the fact that the stable owner is willing to give it away just to get rid of it. Thus the mystery begins.
It is very apparent that this is only the beginning as the book ends with a strong teaser but doesn't have a real cliff-hanger.

The finale is crashingly epic. I read it at the speed of sound. People! This is an excellent read! Buy this book and get immersed!
Dislike - Towards the end there are TOO MANY characters - the reader looses track of who is who.
A full story even though the storyline for further novels has been painted.
