Fast paced with lots of action, don't expect pages of character details here. It gives enough detail and character interaction that you do care about what happens to the main characters though.
It reminded me a lot of the The Doom Brigade (The Chaos War Series)
A story from an "Evil" point of view, but the protagonists are not really evil so much as just trying to do right by their people, their god and their brothers in arms and maybe survive another day.
Interesting plot which is much more original than just a goblin war story and more combat/mystery as you try figure out what is going on in the world and with the main character.
Maybe it was just me but I found the beginning a little rough going, so do yourself a favor and stick with it until he meets the colonel, gets his first mission and meets the "other" black dragon company. It really picks up from there in my opinion.
Shard's Thugs takes a look at life from the goblin's point of view. It documents the struggle of Wiggletooth Shard and his quest for victory against not just the humans, elves, and dwarfs, but also his own troops and comrades in arms.
This is not a book you'd give to your vicar or your maiden aunt (the vicar might enjoy it, but he'd act shocked). Nor is it a book for a 12 yo boy. Though your inner 12 yo boy will love it. There's a lot of vulgar language -- but we're talking goblins here, what else would you expect? There's a fair bit of violence, but again this is a book about war. Violence comes with the territory. All that is redeemed because it is genuinely funny. You feel sympathy for Shard's troubles even as you laugh at his exploits, and are repulsed by the grossness that is goblin life.
A great read for the summer!
In this story, the goblins are the good guys!
