Darla, who is still struggling after the loss of her father, finds herself hurt from a car accident and kidnapped. Lost and afraid, she has no idea the path her life is about to go on to discover the truth of what led her to where she is.
Koontz does a fantastic job of taking on the difficult task of switching from first to third person in a way that keeps the reader interested engaged throughout. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I look forward to more from Koontz!

Last year I won a print copy of Shards of Trust by M.A. Koontz on Goodreads and finally got around to reading it. This is a quick fast paced and suspense filled short story. Well defined characters and a unique and interesting story that will have you on the edge of your seat. A page-turner from start to finish. I wished only that it were a bit longer. A very good debut from this author. I understand that she has other short stories, but I have yet to find any so I really do not know. From what I read her book and short stories usually take place in the heartland of America as this one did. Recommend for a travel read, or just a quick read.
From the back cover: “I did it. It looked like an accident, just as we discussed. It was perfect.”
When Darla Kelly wakes up in a hospital—confused, disoriented, and alone—she can’t help but add it to the list of personal tragedies that have left her reeling. She had been on track: she found a job, a great apartment, a boyfriend, and she got to see her dad every week. But somewhere along the line, things started going wrong. First, her beloved father, a well-respected cardiac surgeon, drowns in his pool, leaving her without any family, then she’s sideswiped by a car and almost dies herself. Having always put her father’s life before her own, she has nothing left to live for.
That is, until she’s kidnapped from her hospital bed and learns that she’s at the center of a major medical conspiracy—one that if left unsolved will result in countless children’s deaths . . . and possibly her own.
