I also own one of those old-fashioned looking nail pullers with the slide handle and moveable fulcrum. It certainly works, but is definitely much more trouble to get into position and get a grip on the nail that these Shark units. On these, just point the paws at the buried nail, give it a whack or two, and voila, it's got the grip it needs to start moving it.
Very versatile, very well made, very worthwhile to have in your toolbox.
I've been using this for a while. I'd say that it's just about as good as the ones made in Japan.
EDIT: I take that last comment back. I'm a full time Framer and this thing just hasn't held up. 18 months later I'm replacing it. Go to [...] and get the Bakuma 280mm version. Don't buy the "Light" version; it's more of a trim tool and can't even grab a 16D sinker.
