Comment: This book has already been loved by someone else. It MIGHT have some wear and tear on the edges, have some markings in it, or be an ex-library book. Over-all it's still a good book at a great price! (if it is supposed to contain a CD or access code, that may be missing)

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-This fast-paced novel centers around the eruption of a volcano on an island off of Papua New Guinea. Alternating chapters describe the experiences of Andy Thompson and his seafaring family when their 45-foot boat is capsized by a 100-foot high tsunami, and of Kaleku, a native boy who sets out alone on his first shark hunt the morning of the disaster. (The calling and hunting of sharks is an important coming-of-age rite in his village; his people are never identified). The boys are not far apart when the tidal wave hits, but never know of the other's existence. In a climactic ending, Kaleku unknowingly calls a school of sharks away from Andy, saving the boy he never met while causing his own death. Campbell does a fine job of building suspense, skillfully describing violent and intense moments, and neatly integrates background information about geology and sailing into the story. Despite the vivid immediacy of the action scenes, however, the people remain fairly dull. Andy is a generic character without much personality, and his family is even less memorable. Similarly, readers never learn anything about Kaleku that is not strictly related to his shark-calling initiation. The engaging plot and fascinating background details overcome the book's flaws, however, making it a good choice for fans of adventure and survival stories.

From Booklist

Gr. 7-10. The parallel stories of two boys' survival are told in alternating chapters in this adventure novel set in the town of Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, and its surrounding waters during a volcanic eruption and subsequent tidal wave. Andy Thompson, his parents, and sister have traveled for years aboard their boat Quintana, while Kaleku and Old Sea-Bird have long prepared for Kaleku's initiation as a shark caller. Surviving the tsunami resulting from the volcanic eruption, the two boys unknowingly travel toward each other in the open sea, pursued by a shark pack. The author's exceptional depiction of a volcanic eruption and its consequences adds curricular value to the book, particularly as the town of Rabaul has been destroyed by two volcanoes that began erupting in September 1994. Book is a smooth read (my description for relaxing and engaging at the same time) and wow, volcano eruption was vivid! Descriptions of pacific island life and family life aboard a small boat were also clear, colorful, and specific, bringing out details that one would never be aware of without experiencing them. I really loved learning about these people, and it was written in a way that made me feel like I lived through it myself!!

If you're looking for a historically accurate, but still enjoyable book, you've hit the jackpot.
The Shark Callers by Eric Campbell is the book for you! It keeps you on the edge of your seat, but at the same time, you get to know all of the characters, and when something happens to them, it happens to you too.
You never know what's coming JUST around the corner, and the pivotal point at the end of the book is awesome.
A wonderful book=)
