After a bit of consideration, I went to the shark web site and called them to see what could be done, because I really did not want to buy a new vacuum, after explaining what had happened and giving them the model number #NV502 -31, I was then asked for a four digit number that is on the the prongs ie; the Plug of the power cord. After a few minutes, I was asked for my address and was told that a new head assembly for the vacuum would sent out and we should receive it within 5 to 10 business days. I was told that it is still with in the warranty period, I asked if I should send our current vacuum head assembly back to shark. I was told to simply toss in the trash and that was it, now while I'm pleased to receive such prompt, courteous, hassle free support.
This also leads me to wonder why, I did not question the reasoning or the reason why everything went so smoothly, but I did notice on the Shark web site that the current model I purchased is not listed as an item that can be purchased, I did ask if it was on the end of life status and i was told in no certain terms or an out right sold statement that it was, but that it can still be bought but in a roundabout way it was confirmed that it is an end of life model but as along as it is in the warranty period, they will honor it and provide support for it.
Now while I was on the phone with the support rep, I asked in all honesty I was looking at getting a new Vacuum and I inquired about the what if "I do purchase a new vacuum and if a belt or brush roller goes bad, do I take it to repair shop or can I do it my self" I was told out right (NO) either will void the warranty and I should call shark and go through them if anything like that needed to done. I was really surprised to hear that, because if I do it my self is a no go and taking it to a repair shop is a no go, then what? Then rep did not elaborate on this and I honestly I did not push the issue.
And as I think back on this, I really should have, but why I did not is simply because now I am questioning on whether I should look at new Shark vacuum purchase, will I/we end up with the same thing again, and there are to many what if's. As to this review and why I took this long to write it, in all honesty I did not intend to wait this long, I simply lost track of time, on the same note, I never write any reviews within a couple of months on a product that I never used or had before, I always give it at least a half year, this way I give a much better and honest review.
In all honesty, this vacuum always worked great and did a great job of cleaning and picked up some things I never would have thought it would, we also have a dog and and it picked up the dog hair like no bodies business, even when using the wand attachments, we could see how well it cleaned, but then there is the brush roller that always got clogged if you will with the dog hair and cleaning it was more trouble than it was worth, and yet you could see the canister fill up. And I have to say that it s a small capacity canister and does not take much to fill it up, the lift away option is nice and makes for cleaning the car easier or getting in to high places, the hose has never given any issues like cracking or separating from the vacuum.
The lights on the vacuum head "aka head lights" are really not that great and never really helped in seeing where you were cleaning, in all honesty they are worthless and you can not turn them off even if you wanted to, so you are stuck with the lights being on at all times, my single and only gripe about shark and the vacuum model we have, is that it took one year for it to go bad and it was the head that houses the motor for brush roller and a switch to to turn off the rollers when you put it in an upright position but not turning it off, when those parts or any of them go bad the vacuum is basically only using what ever suction it has to pick up any dirt or in our case dog hair.
As I stated just a bit above, I am questioning if I / we should buy another shark, because if we simply need to replace a belt it voids the warranty, I did look on you tube on what it would take to simply clean the brush roller of any and all dog hair that is wrapped around it / clogging it and it literately means taking the entire head of the vacuum apart and there are hidden screws not to mention taking care not to damage the wires and a very small switch as well as a very small plug for the lights.
In closing I / we will see what happens when we get the replacement head assembly and take things from there, there will be choices to make and we just end up with another shark, because I really am not looking to buy a vacuum for almost 1k. To all reading this review, I hope it was of some help, and I will try to answer any questions as best I can.
It has been a a few weeks now since we received the new head assembly for this vacuum, and it did arrive within the time frame I was given by Shark support. The Vacuum is working just as if it was brand new, but as you can tell from one of the images there already is hair that is being wrapped around the roller, from Dog hair and yes hair from our daughters that have long hair and from brushing it, the hair ends up on the floor and that just can't be helped. And this is where there will be issues in the very near future, as I have stated in the main review, if we try to remove the roller to clean and remove the hair, the warranty will be void, that brings up the question how is anyone to clean and keep the roller free from hair as it does build up and this Vacuum is made to be used in a home that has pets (Dogs, Cats) now we have a small dog. What about those that have a large Dog like a lab or a Shepperd, they shed much more and longer hair, it's not meant to be, nor does Shark want the Vacuum taken to a repair shop or warranty will be void, you the owner are not to remove the roller or replace a belt that may brake or the warranty will be void, as I was told on the phone with the Shark support rep.
This vacuum picks up like crazy until it gets clogged. Every few months my husband has to "unclog" the hose. He has to take the whole thing apart and fish out the clogs. It is poorly designed.
It finally stopped working - and thank goodness - I can finally give this thing away and buy something that works and isn't such a constant hassle.
Now, my full size dyson lasted 10 years, and my cordless one is still relatively new, so we'll have to see if the Shark holds up as well and for as long as the dyson did, but as far as out of the box cleaning is concerned, A+. And I have 2 dogs, so we have a ton of dirt to clean!
