Mundie Moms & Mundie Kids Book Reviews on August 24, 2011

This is a great-action packed, under water adventure that centers around sharks. If you have ever wondered what really goes on a in sharks world, then Shark Wars will have your answer.

Celebrate Discovery's Shark Week with Shark Wars (Geek Dad 07.29.11)

I recently received a reviewer copy of Shark Wars by first-time children's book author E.J. Altbacker. I must admit this is a great fast-paced, action-packed series, perfect for reluctant young readers. Yes, despite its lack of pop-up pictures, even my seven year-old is tackling this book.

Shark Wars - Great Beach Reading! I LOVED THIS BOOK! It is well written, the description of the story made it come alive and the whole story was really good. The shark characters were great and I really want to read more about them. I give Shark Wars five out of five bookworms! (This Kid Reads Books 08/05/15) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This is a great action packed, under water adventure that centers around sharks. If you have ever wondered what really goes on a in sharks world, than Shark Wars will have your answer.

Gray is a typical reef shark, or so he thought. He and his friends live with the Coral Shiver, a clan of sharks, but when Gray is banned for not following rules, he finds himself in the middle of a large ocean that's full of excitement and danger. Things change for Gray when he's is taken in by the Goblin Shiver, ruled by Goblin. He becomes blinded by the things these mean sharks are doing and he gets a first hand taste at betrayal, treachery and just how far some sharks will go to get what they want.

Gray is a shark that's easy to like, despite some of the poor decisions he makes. He has a great character arc through out the story and in the end he learns a powerful lesson about making the right choice and friendship. Gray has some fabulous friends who have come together to form the Rogue Shiver, and I really enjoyed getting to meet them. One of my favorite characters is Takiza, the beta fish who's wisdom and advice to Gray remind me of Yoda from Star Wars. He also has some mad fighting skills.

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this story. This is one exiting, action packed, fast paced story that takes readers into a whole new underwater world. These's battles, a fabulous underwater setting, and a large cast of great shark characters. I also like that on both inside covers of the book are pictures of the sharks, and other sea animals that are apart of the story, along with their names. It makes it easy for readers to connect with the characters. I should say this was done on the ARC, so I'm not sure if this made it into the final copy of the book.

Even though he was a good reader, my 8 year old son was constantly telling me he didn't like to read. As an avid reader myself, it broke my heart because I knew that reading could open up so many more worlds for him. I tried Hardy Boys and Diary of a Wimpy Kid (which he did read) but there wasn't the excitement that a "good" book brings. I ran across Shark Wars and thought I would give it a try since he is fascinated with sharks. EUREKA!!!! My son now wants to read with me every night and he's told me "Mom, I love this book!" I just bought book #2 (full price) and I can hardly wait till it gets here so he can continue his "love affair".

I am an 8 year old girl. At the beginning you will think the book will never end because the book starts out slowly. But when Gray and Barclay meet Goblin Shiver everything starts to get exciting! It does not matter if you are a girl or a boy, you will enjoy this book.

He is obsessed with Sharks and everything about them, so I figured this book would be a nice birthday gift and also a good read. I like to get him things that allow him to exercise his brain while having fun at the same time, and this book seemed to fit the bill perfectly! Recommended.

Grandson is ten and an avid reader.reads at an 8th grade level, so these are not challenging for him but an easy read. he has been reading the Reign of Fire book series ( which is AWESOME). While waiting for book three of that series to arrive I ordered book one the Shark Wars series.. He loves the charaxcters and he is already into book three of the series. Lots of action! This is definitely a BOY book.....If your child likespictures in a book, forget it. there are none. Only inside covers and back pages shows pictures of the different Shark Characters with their names.

This book changed my sons life! I'm not even kidding. I am a huge advocate of reading. So it was incredibly frustrating when our third grader wouldn't read (even though he is a super smart boy. He decided he didn't like to read, so he wasn't going to!). His grades (not just language arts, but math, social studies etc...) were suffering, his behavior in school was suffering. He was having a Really challenging time in his experience as a third grader. Doing homework was insanely frustrating, a constant battle! Ugh!

Enter a facebook post out of desperation, "Please Help! Looking for a good 8 year old boy book!"

Then my girlfriend posted about Shark Wars and that it's a great book for young readers. Reluctantly, I ordered it...and now I wish I had ordered it a year ago!!!

Within just a week or two, I noticed he would sit patiently and work independently on his homework. Hmmm...something's changed!? Then I noticed instead of playing Xbox on Saturday, he was curled up reading Shark Wars! I thought maybe this was a phase, but it continued...

His grades went from B's & C's to A's & B's in one marking period. His class behavior has been exemplary! I am so serious when I say it changed his life! I am so thankful for Mr. Altbacker! I knew I had a smart kid...but more importantly, now the boy knows as well! Yay for Shark Wars! And even better, there are 5 books in the series!

As for a review on the book, other than what my son excitedly tells me about, I don't know. He happily tells me all about Gray and his friends and the challenges they have in the ocean. It is an exciting chapter book for the kids to fall in love with. I am certain that girls would find it equally exciting, or anyone with an affinity for the sea and all the creatures it houses!!
