It never made smoothies smooth, it couldn't chop herbs well at all, and eggs? They became a frothy, runny mess.
Flash forward several years later and I'm now curious about Green Smoothies. I knew I didn't want to spend money on a big expensive blender, so the 2 contenders were the Nutri Ninja and the Nutribullet Pro. I read reviews, watched YouTube demos and thought they both looked pretty good. The Nutribullet has more accessories and 2 blades which initially almost sold me. The blades are flat and my experience with the Magic Bulket flat blade told me that this blade wouldn't work as well as a traditional 4 blade model with 2 different levels of blending (which the Nutri Ninja has). The next bit of info I stumbled upon made my decision very easy. In July of 2014, Consumer Reports cautioned consumers about the Nutribullet Pro stating "Latest NutriBullet poses safety hazard.
A blade on the NutriBullet Pro 900 can break, causing risk of ingestion."
The warning from Consumer Reports along with a $30 cheaper price tag on the Ninja lead me to purchase a Nutri Ninja and I'm so happy I did!
It works exactly how I had hoped. Smooth consistency with absolutely no chunks. I've blended veggies, fruits (fresh and frozen), ice, seeds, nuts, made milkshakes...everything was perfect. Cleanup is easy since you can use the top rack of the dishwasher.
I make green smoothies daily in the large cup using the following recipe and they are smooth, creamy, cold and healthy. They also happen to taste great:
1 cup liquid (water, green tea, whatever you want. Fruit juice would sweeten it up but it also adds a lot of carbs)
1 cup greens (spinach, kale, bok choy, Swiss chard, cilantro, etc. - use in any combination)
1 1/2 cups frozen fruit (you can use fresh, but the smoothie will be much better if at least 1/2 cup is frozen)
3 ice cubes
Optional - add ins such as flax, nuts, ginger, lemons ( minus the peel and seeds)
A recipe for a quick milkshake that blends up perfectly:
2 cups vanilla ice cream
1 cup milk
1 TBSP sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
I would recommend the Nutri Ninja without hesitation.
After 6 months of nearly daily use my opinion remains unchanged - this is a great product. It blends so smoothly and evenly. I do put the container and blade on the top rack of the dishwasher, so cleaning is effortless and the parts appear to be no worse off than if I were to hand wash them. Still easily 5 stars.
Still love my Nutri Ninja Pro 900 watt blender. Not once has it failed to turn out great results.
Yes, I still wash the blending cup and blade in the dishwasher and no problems there.
Just a note about green smoothies. I have found that the recipe I posted earlier is too high in carbs for me daily. I have changed the ratio to 1:1 for fruits and veggies (so I cup of spinach and 1 cup of frozen fruit -- it could be 1 fruit or a combo). This works better if you are carb sensitive.
My favorite meal replacement smoothie from this past year was:
1 cup unsweetened green tea (or water)
1 cup spinach
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 cup frozen pineapple
3 TBSP toasted coconut greek yogurt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 TBSP natural almond butter
I'm happy to report that my Nutri Ninja Pro is still working just as great as the day I got it. Still using the dishwasher to clean the cup and blade with no ill effects. Love this blender. My current favorite recipe to make is iced coffee.
1 cup milk (I use 1%)
5 coffee ice cubes (I pour left over coffee into ice cube trays and freeze)
1 ice cube
Sweetner (I like low carb, so I add just a splash of almond joy or hazelnut coffee creamer. The kids like it sweet, so they get 1/2 TBSP sugar plus 2 TBSP Torani French Vanilla Syrup).
The covers provided are not leak proof.
Ridges inside cup make it difficult to cleanly scrape the insides. I assume the ridges are for structural support. But not sure why they didn't design it on the outside.Maybe it would have interfered with the base somehow. Only the designer knows for sure I suppose. Just hope it wasn't an over site!
Would be nicer if the cups were made from strong glass.
Blends super fast and super smooth (5-10 sec)!
2 cups provides 3 full meals.
Both cups easily store in the fridge
Does NOT sound obnoxiously loud. 900 watt motor of this blender is quieter than the 1000 watt Ninja Pro.
Easy to clean.
Takes up little counter space.
Powerful 900 watt motor should last a while (since you don't have to blend for long periods of time).
Very simple to use.
Small recipe book included.
Unlike the larger 72oz container of the Ninja Pro 1000, the smaller cubic area cups allow more efficient and smoother blending of foods.
Extra mini rectangular blade puts this blade about the rest. Won't slice your fingers like the Ninja Pro 1000!
Neural colored base won't be an eye sore on your counter top.
Lightweight durable plastic. However, I haven't had it long enough to see how well it will last.
I hope you find this review helpful as I have found many reviews helpful to me. Thanks to everyone who ever posted a review!
