Pretty comprehenssive stuff...what`s this other guy ravin on about??? 3-10 densly written pages pr. subtype and has some 610 comprehensivly written pages whereas 550 are from the book and the rest is regarding the appendix. I usually enjoy this book in those small afternoon hours in my favourite recliner :-) This book does not have any pictures of sharks in their environment, but rather individual color profile sketches of each subtype and many sketches of the respective tooth of the types (both upper and lower) and these are plentiful. No images of the jaws are presented. Very good close-up`s/zoom`s (real time B/W photographs) of the dermal denticles (sharkskin) of all shark types are also complemented and freehand profiles of the sharks teeth (not just one particular tooth, but many) Also, free hand sketch of the view from below and showing the front snout shape of each type going aft of the gills. The types of sharks are divided into respective families i.e. crocodile sharks, Rough sharks etc etc..and each family is given a good introduction. The first part of the appendix (20 pages) covers the sharks reproductive processes and has very many extremely good quality colour pictures of the "shark egg`s/uterus/ovary" Shown are also the yet "unborn" sharks inside the uterus. This rare book has alot of interesting stuff you didn`t know about these sharks to say the least, and will keep you entertained for months! common name, spanish name, scientific name, synonyms, identification, similar species, range, size and weight, biology, size at maturity, reproduction, nurseries, age and growth (if at all available) and...the author has commented at the end of each study whether or not the specific shark has any relations to humans...like fishing, historical significance/cultural significance etc.Read more ›

As a shark fanatic, I had high expectations and great anticipation for this book... and was beyond delighted and impressed! It's an amazing and thorough read. I really appreciate all of the hard work Jose did over a decade to gather the information from scratch himself, traveling all over the continent to draw and measure each specimen himself. There was a lot of misinformation prior to this book and I sincerely appreciate the consistency of the facts provided. Best. Shark. Book. Ever!

Best book on sharks to-date, it has illustrations done from actual specimens of every single species in the book, along with photos of the microscopic details of each shark's dermal denticles - who knew they were all so unique?? - which are art in themselves. Dr. Castro was very thorough in his research and worked on this book for over 10yrs. The one star review made me laugh and makes me think it was a practical joke being played on the author, who himself is a prankster! Not a kids book, but shark-loving youngsters will enjoy the illustrations and will grow into the content.
