I couldn't put her book down. Daleen Berry has a new fan in me. I cannot wait to read more of her work.
Folks who enjoy reading about crime and/or have been involved in any capacity with the profession of journalism will enjoy the fast-paced adventures of an intrepid community newspaper reporter in Preston County, West Virginia. As detailed in “Shatter the Silence,” Preston County may not have a large population in comparison to larger towns and cities; however, the county is no stranger to serious crimes, including murder, domestic violence and more.
Having myself worked several years in the profession of journalism in West Virginia, I could relate to Berry’s descriptions of life as a reporter. She writes with both in-depth experience and authority regarding the late nights, courtrooms, chasing down the police for the facts of a story, intense city council, board of education meetings, and more. “Shatter” brought back many memories of my early career. I enjoyed Berry’s witty writing style, including her catchy phrasing, such as “courtroom courtship.” Her excellent style provides us with a quick, easy read.
Like her first memoir, "Shatter the Silence" is an empowering book for moms! Moms trying to make ends meet. Working moms holding down a paid job AND holding down the unpaid job of taking care of kids, getting them to school, cooking them breakfast, making sure their school forms are signed, all the things that add more work, particularly for the single parent.
Reading the conversations between Berry and the detective, how the courtship unfolded through work-related conversations, and in between crazy work hours and taking care of kids, made me contemplate how busy we get and how fast our lives move. When we are young in school, college, training, etc., we are extremely busy. And as we get older our being busy takes on added weight, as we have house payments, kids, taking care of aging parents, and added responsibilities on top of our jobs with employers. Yet, no matter how busy we get, if we’re single, we often continue to feel a big hole often like something missing. Thus many of us throughout our lives continue to yearn for That Great Love (and a little bit of help and support when we need it never hurts!) Berry's work reminds us we should never stop dreaming no matter what, no matter how much harder it seems to find love and commitment as we travel through life’s many duties.
"Shatter the Silence" is an important book to inspire us to overcome the difficulties of finding true love. This book shows us how a couple can find a way to communicate and make a relationship work while juggling two lives, two sets of kids, two careers, and complex personal issues dealing with divorce and past abuse, trauma.
One thing readers will learn from this book is to always wear your seatbelt! So before you open the first page, put on your seatbelt for an extraordinary ride. An interesting, quick-reading, engaging memoir of a loving relationship for anyone who believes: Love will find a way!
