Hunter and Lizzy are trapped in darkness. Hunter is blinded by pain from the death of the women he thought he was going to the spend the rest of his life with. He is drowning in guilt, believing it was his fault. He is hiding his pain with drinking, and fighting random strangers at the bar. Lizzy has been an anorexic for most of her life, and she's trying to overcome the abuse from her ex-boyfriend. They recognized each others brokenness, connected through art, and became each others salvation.
The plot was realistic and intensely tragic. It was easy to feel connected to both Hunter and Lizzy pain. The story builds gradually and you learn about each character as they're struggling in everyday life. Skylar Heart created strong vulnerable characters that touched my heart. The details of each character painted a clear picture in my mind too. I experienced Hunter and Lizzy's emotions with them, and I felt like I was fighting their struggles with them.
There was a few things I wish were different. There wasn’t a very strong HEA. I was rooting for them the entire time, but the last chapter they still had a fragile relationship. I wanted to know, for sure, that they would be able to make it after everything they had been through. I was also wondering what happened to Lizzy's friend, Hanna. She seemed like she was dropped half way through. That being said, I enjoyed this book, and I'm excited to see what else Skylar Heart will write.
I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an ARC of this story.
When I read the book I got the feeling that something is missing.....perhaps all due to the fact the majority of the book consists in how both characters negate their feeling. I personally would rather have been paid more attention to the relationship between the two after acknowledging their feelings for each other. I wanted the book to focus on the magical power of love to heal and this process..... instead highlighted how the two characters are not for each other and how they will only destroy one another. Also I put three stars because there were things that I saw unreal....
Lizzie and H/Hunter are both broken, but in very different ways. She's dealing with anorexia and self harming, he's grieving for a brother and girlfriend. They meet each other through their only connection, art class. They are instantly attracted, but this is a slow burn process, both very wary and unwilling to connect with each other fully.
A good story line with nice plot twists. But its the feels and emotions that this book brings out, whilst dealing with very difficult subject matter. Heart wrenching, sweet, angst aplenty, with some hot sexy scenes in there as well.
Definitely worth a read, I will look forward to reading more from this author

Carla's Four Star Review
Shattered is book one in the Damaged Heart series, and it is Hunter and Lizzy's story.
Hunter and Lizzy are two people trapped in darkness. When they meet, they each recognize the brokenness in each other, and, as they get to know one another, they become each other's life line. The question is this-Can two broken souls come together and heal one another, or will their demons leave them spinning out of control?
Okay, first let me say that I went into this story blind. I normally always read what the book is about, but for whatever reason, I didn't do that with this book, and I am glad I didn't. I tend to steer clear of story lines that deal with mental illness, but I was pleasantly surprised how this author dealt with this topic. I thought she approached it with both clarity and sensitivity. I was drawn into Hunter and Lizzy's world from the very beginning so much so that I read the entire book in just one sitting. Hunter and Lizzy were both well developed characters, and I kept my fingers crossed throughout the story hoping they would find their happily ever after. Did they? Well, you will just have to one click to find out!

This book is about a girl named Lizzie and a boy named Hunter. They are both broken people in different ways, she has anorexia and is in recovery. she also has a lapses with self harm. Hunter still grieves for the brother he lost to illness and that his girlfriend was killed in an accident. They meet each other in art class which is for gifted pupils, with them both having their guards up, you are taken on their emotional journey.
I really liked skylar's writing style. the characters are quiet believable and I was rooting for them. I did want to know more about Lola and what happened to her as we never really found out and I feel an epilogue would have been a good addition with a little peek I to their future together.
I give this 4.5/5
i think Skylar did an amazing job on witting this storyline. It is an emotional and gritty novel, dealing with an awful illness. This story takes us on a rollercoaster of a journey, which intrigues, captivates, and endears the reader throughout.
I cannot wait to read more from this author,
