Keegan also grabs my heart from the beginning. Love the way he is attracted to Lexi but feels her pain and moves slowly. He doesn’t want to be a temporary relief to her emotional agony. Keegan knows what she is going through as he has guilt over the loss of his partner and recognizes the methods he used to dull the pain.
What I love about this story is the focus on a strong woman. She suffers from PTSD, recognizes that she needs help and takes advice from people she trusts to get the help she needs. I also love that the story doesn’t go exactly as I expect. There are several times while reading that I feel confident that Lexi is going to do something one way, but the story goes another way. It is more realistic for me. The same happens with Keegan. It is refreshing when an author decides to skip the expected and deal with real-life problems in a realistic manner.
If there is anything that I would enjoy more is seeing Keegan’s and Lexi’s time with Dr. Miranda. Their joint visits are mentioned, but the reader isn’t allowed access to that time. Also, a couple times throughout the story it slows down; experiencing some of their concerns and challenges instead of just reading a mention would make the story more fulfilling.
Shattered Souls is a beautiful beginning to a new series. The characters in this book are memorable and touch my heart with their struggle to overcome their pasts. If Shattered Souls is an indication of the stories and characters in the future books in this series, I, most definitely, read them all. I wholeheartedly recommend Shattered Souls for anyone who loves reading about a couple with a lot to overcome individually and as a couple. It is worth your time to experience this read.
While Lexi's story is told in the book's blurb, it's HIS story that got me and then the mix of them together? Forget it. I was emotional toast by the end. Out of the gate it was a slow start, lots of background and set up of Lexi and her current state of mind. She came home from the war shell shocked and not yet equipped to handle things without being totally numb. You instantly feel for the girl and want help her get up and fight through it.
Living with her friend until she can get things sorted (job, apartment, that kind of stuff), Lexi knows she needs to talk to somebody, but isn't quite ready yet. One thing that can help her forget is him. She sees him once and knows he's the one for her. She feels it. Now, I'm not a fan of insta-love, but these two get a pass, as they are so perfect for each other. Lexi wants to know more about this knight in shining armor, but is scared that he'll see right through to her haunting past.
He's awesome and yes, I am protecting his identity and all he is, as I liked his character that much,he needs to be a surprise. He is beautifully flawed and has the biggest heart always open for others. Strapped with his own haunting memories of the past, he doesn't let that stop from helping this appealing, yet broken woman and trying to make her his.
Shattered Souls is fantastic and I couldn't get to the end fast enough once the ball started rolling. Along with Lexi and her knight, we also have her handful of old friends and new ones they both pick up along the way. Everybody has a part in this story and that's what made it work so well. You were invested in all of the characters, not just the main ones. I see this is a book one and I will be first in line for book two!
