Havent seen this one in some time. You really dont know who to believe but you trust Gus (Hoskins the PI) implicilty from the jump. Every thing the wife touches turns into her inner poison. The scene where Dan pulls up the body...great! I had forgotten and expected something else. All in all great fun as one tries to recall, much like Dan, what in fact happened. Recommend for a Sunday night movie.

Serviceable 90s thriller directed by the great Wolfgang Petersen. I disagree with some reviewers - I think it shows its age a bit. Story -- a successful architect survives a horrible car-wreck, only to find himself with Amnesia -- is top notch, and well scripted. Bay Area locales are great, although I still can't figure out why he wakes up in L.A., and then has to drive back to the Bay Area, when the crash took place in Marin? Continuity, anyone? A who's who of 90s era (now-faded) stars, most of which are decent but not great actors/actresses. Tom Berenger is good, but was much better in Platoon. Was Corbin Bernsen ever good in any movie? I'm sorry, i can't help thinking of the L.A. Law character. The exception is Bob Hoskins, who literally steals the show as a pet shop owner-cum-private eye (don't ask). We get to see way too much of Greta Scacchi's lovely body in a typically 90s soft core porn fashion. But, all in all a good entry in the murder mystery genre.

When is this film going to be on DVD?
A well-styled thriller mystery with a great cast. Tom Berenger does well as a confused amnesiac who just wants to get to the truth behind his accident--even if it means he discovers things he doesn't really want to know. The ever-lovable Bob Hoskins plays the detective who helps him uncover the truth. Greta Scacchi is his loyal wife (with perhaps a few secrets?).
This film is very engrossing and entertaining. Even though I usually can guess the way a mystery movie is going to go (I am getting pretty good at predicting "who dunnit") this movie had a few more twists that I anticipated. I really enjoyed the surprises in the plot.
There are some unanswered questions left unanswered, and more than a few plot holes. But still--don't let that keep you from enjoying the mystery. It's a greatly entertaining tale. It certainly is due for a DVD version!

This was another film from the early 90's I was very fond of and had not seen in some time as I still only owned it on video. I was pleased to find it as a used dvd on amazon as the price of a new copy is beyond steep. As I remembered it, the story is very entertaining, if you can ride along with an eccentric plot. Wolfgang Petersen has directed some fine films over the years. I've not managed to see Das Boot yet, but In The Line Of Fire, A Perfect Storm and Troy were all good, if different films. You might not have come across Shattered. Our main character (Dan Merreck) played by Tom Berenger, is involved in a very serious car accident and almost dies. His face has to be reconstructed and his wife amazingly has no injuries. He has lost his memory due to the accident and as he gets back to normal life, he slowly learns more and more through regular flashbacks. His wife is played by the beautiful Gretta Scachi who most hot blooded males would remember from films in the 80's and 90's and their friends are a couple played by Corbin Bernsen (of L.A Law) and Joanna Whalley (of Scandal and who was married to Val Kilmer). Bob Hoskins also plays a private detective and the story is very twisty and entertaining, almost like a whirlwind novel. You'll need a multi region dvd player/blu ray, to play this, but if you can pick it up at a reasonable price or you can find it on holiday in America, I hope you enjoy it as much as me. The dvd picture isn't super sharp as it's now 25 years old. However, it's one of those entertaining and violent thrillers from the 90's that you simply won't forget.

Bougth it mainly because I`m a Berenger and Joanne Whalley fan, and was not disappointed to learn that also the film in it self
is great, and contains other skillful actors. The plot is well enough explained by other reviewers.

A fairly pedestrian 'thriller' whose gimmick, once seen, pretty much renders the rest of its plot a moot point. Apart from Bob Hoskins, the acting is marginal to weak, with Greta Scacchi doing an atrocious Sharon Stone knock-off. The transfer is middle of the road; weaker than anticipated colors and contrast levels, softer than anticipated image quality and a lacking in eye-popping fine details. If I had to guess, this is a tired old MGM transfer merely slapped out to disc in whatever condition the current elements exist in. Not impressive and I could have easily passed on this. You should too.
