About Shawn Kimbro
Shawn Kimbro worked his way through college catching and selling catfish from Tennessee rivers. Over thirty years later, he still fishes every chance he gets, usually for striped bass (rockfish) on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. A frequent speaker to fishing clubs, environmental groups, and conservation organizations, he is recognized across the Mid-Atlantic region as a leading voice for sports fishing and conservation. When he isn't directing the Sleep Medicine Program at George Washington University, he serves as a Board Member for the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and volunteers for the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA). A staunch advocate for conservation, he has been active in the Careful Catch initiative - an effort co-sponsored by the Boat U.S. Foundation, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and CCA Maryland. His innovative techniques for catching big fish on light tackle were recently featured in Angler's Journal magazine and have been written about in well-known publications like Chesapeake Bay Magazine, the Baltimore Sun, the Washington Post, The Annapolis Capital, Saltwater Sportsman, Field & Stream, and many others. He is the author of the popular fishing and conservation oriented blog, Chesapeakelighttackle.com.
_______________
Shawn Kimbro catches Chesapeake Bay striped bass Tennessee style. That is to say this son of the Volunteer State thinks of stripers as oversized largemouth bass with black racing stripes. There's a lot of running and gunning. And a lot of twitching and jigging. It's not for the laid back. Or the introspective. But it is too much fun. And, most importantly, it works! ~ Candus Thomson, The Baltimore Sun

From a teenager who got his first job as a dock boy on a Tennessee lake, to a songwriter who created a bluegrass band with his sons, to a Chesapeake Bay resident who can't wait to get off work and jump into his Judge center console, Shawn Kimbro has always had a soft spot in his heart for fish.

The best part about Kimbro's cold-weather triumphs is that he lets the big ones get away after the catch. ~ Angus Phillips, The Washington Post

Blog postIf you do a keyword search for “invasive species” on any Chesapeake Bay-centered social media platform, you’ll most likely see more than you want to know about northern snakeheads. But, there are lesser-known invasives in the Chesapeake watershed, some that aren’t considered harmful and that are even stocked by our state natural resource agencies. I’ll […]1 year ago Read more

Blog postI quit rockfish. Yes I did. Well, at least for a while. I haven’t fished for striped bass since December 6, 2017. That was the day we landed three huge stripers including a 50-incher just below Poplar Island. It seemed like a good stopping point. Now, don’t get me wrong, I haven’t quit fishing, nor […]3 years ago Read more
