THE STORY
Few movies capture the triumph of the human spirit as memorably as Frank Darabont’s film The Shawshank Redemption, from the same Stephen King story collection that gave us Stand by Me. It is an extraordinary tale of hope, friendship and survival inside a maximum security prison. Morgan Freeman plays Red, a lifer who knows how to cope with the bleak hopelessness of Shawshank State Prison. Tim Robbins plays new inmate Andy, a quiet banker convicted of murders he didn’t commit – and whose indomitable will earns Red’s respect and friendship. Andy’s resourcefulness brings hope and change to the entire prison. He’s full of surprises. And the best comes last, leading to one of the most satisfying finales in film history.

A TALENTED CAST
TIM ROBBINS (as ANDY DUFRESNE) Tim Robbins began his acting career at age 12 in New York City. After graduating from UCLA, he landed supporting roles in major films like Top Gun and Bull Durham before his breakthrough lead performance in Robert Altman’s 1992 Hollywood parable The Player, for which he won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival. In Shawshank, Robbins plays Andy, a mild-mannered New England banker convicted and sentenced to double life sentences for the murder of his unfaithful wife and her lover.

MORGAN FREEMAN (as ELLIS BOYD "RED" REDDING)After attending Los Angeles Community College, Tennessee-born Morgan Freeman embarked on a long and successful acting career, first on the stage and then in film, where he has captured a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his performance in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby. He also scored Oscar nominations for the 1987 drama Street Smart, then, two years later, as Best Actor in Driving Miss Daisy (re-creating his Obie Award-winning role from the off-Broadway play), and received yet another Best Actor nomination for an his portrait of “lifer” and prison “fixer” Red Redding in The Shawshank Redemption, perhaps his most well-known role. |
JAMES WHITMORE (as BROOKS HATLAN)After graduating from Yale while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, veteran star James Whitmore won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Newcomer for the Broadway show Command Decision. A Best Supporting Oscar nomination came with only his second major film role, in 1949’s Battleground. Since then, Whitmore has maintained a steady and eclectic career. A prison librarian who’s been incarcerated his entire adult life, Brooks Hatlen has become institutionalized to the extent that his biggest fear is freedom. |
BOB GUNTON (as WARDEN NORTON)A Vietnam veteran, California native Bob Gunton achieved early acclaim for his role opposite then-newcomer Meryl Streep in the 1977 Brecht-Weill musical Happy End, which marked Gunton’s Broadway debut. Since then, he has earned Tony nominations for stage roles in Evita as well as for the title role in the 1990 Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd. Gunton has also demonstrated his versatility on film, notably as Samuel Norton, the devout, deceitful warden of de Shawshank prison |
WILLIAM SADLER (as HEYWOOD)A graduate of the State University of New York and Cornell University, Buffalo native William Sadler is a veteran performer whose varied film roles have made him an instantly recognizable face in American movies. His talents made him a perfect fit for Heywood, a member of Red’s inner circle at Shawshank. |

The movie stresses several themes. One was friendship which he found with Red. Then he found things to maintain his dignity and sense of humanity. For instance he offered to set up tax loopholes for the guards in return for beer for his friends. At the same time there was the dehumanization as he was raped and he saw that people became prisoners in their minds even if they were released. The last is hope which Andy struggled to maintain.
Robbins and Freeman gave two amazing and low key performances. Their relationship is what drives the entire movie.
Sometimes I think I subconsciously pick movies to rewatch hundreds of times because they bring me some semblance of comfort. I relate to them in more ways than I can possibly admit.
The Shawshank Redemption is one of those movies with an extremely high rewatch value, in my opinion. I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve seen it. I also know that sometimes when I’m blue I do multiple viewings of it in a short period of time. It never fails to put a tear in my eye when Andy Dufresne rips that sewage stained t-shirt from his skin and lets the rain wash everything away as he meets his freedom.
I feel sorry for people who have never seen this film. So, if you’re reading this and other reviews in an attempt to gather up enough positive feedback to make a final judgment call in whether you should watch this movie, I’m telling you you should watch it.
It’s one of the most exemplary models of what a movie should be. The casting is great and the storyline and message behind it is deep. A definite must watch!
I went from watching this on DVD to the Amazon app and now on 4K Blu-ray, each time with visual improvement on the video quality. It’s stunning and well worth the purchase!

My copy is the 10th Anniversary, 3 disc Special Edition. Disc 1 has the film and with it an exemplary audio description track for the visually impaired. Indeed the box set has a sticker across it in braille. There are English subtitles for the hearing impaired. A commentary by Frank Darabont the director, plus biographies and memorable quotes.
Discs 2 & 3 are choc-a-bloc full of extras and bonus features that are a real treat in entertainment and information when you have a few hours to spare on a rainy day ---- I've watched some of it, not all, and I'm glad the producers were able to compile these extras before we lose some of those players from the film.
Years from now people will be scrambling to put together something like this to recognize the importance of the film. Thankfully it has been done, credit to the producers and crew for their foresight.
This version of the film is 136 minutes long and is a perfect example of the level of sophistication that a company / group can reach to bring a product to both the hearing and visually impaired. Well done.
