Our main characters start off with Dean having a lot of anbger issues with his mom and stepfather.
He doesn't get to know Allison, until they are at the university together. Meanwhile her best friend Samantha or Sam, is helping to encouage her to try her wings and do what she will.
This is a story about rape and the repercussions it caused, mainly for the girl involved. The guy was wealthy and came from an influential family, untouchable, it seemed. Allison feels terrible guilt over her best friend's suicide and sets out for REVENGE.
The book starts out with Allison and Sam preparing to sneak out of the house and go to a 'forbidden' party with young men and alcohol. Allison has already decided that she want to see what sex is all about. Her friend Sam has a reputation, but she says she just really enjoys kissing a bit of making out. Their major concern is sneaking back into the house and not getting caught my Allison's mom the next morning.
Things are much worse for Dean Warren. His parents used to fight all the time and then his father was suddenly dying. No sooner was he hospitalized, than his mother took up and took to her bed, Richard. She had always disliked/hated her son, Dean. She became pregnant and had to marry his father. Now, she was free and wasted no time making sure she and her new husband made their feelings about Dean well know. Dean develops anger issues and is now on his third private school that year, having been expelled from two others. Do they get him help for his issues, of course not.
Scene changes to 5 years later with both of them attending the same university. She purposely goes out to flirt with the guys play a casual game of rugby. There she spots bad boy, Dean. Thus begins their cat and mouse game of love and steamy sex scenes. They fall in love. But, she never lets Dean know about her revenge plans. This part of the book is wonderful and kept my attention fully occupied.
I won't give any more details, it ends on a HFN, which I think is realistic considering all that happens.
This is still a timely topic with too many guys getting away with rape. Parents of girls: prepare them well before they go to university, or perhaps even high school. Information and self-defense = survival.
This was a bit of a tough read. It does not have flowers, hearts or rainbows. It had questionable material. Though is was done with the utmost, greatest taste. The sensitivity was amazing. It has an ok ending. I was hoping for a little brighter ending (with the book being so dark). But it is what it is.
Dean and Allison will stay a part of you. From the very beginning you can feel this dread settle over you.You think you know but every turn you're lost again but you know Allison's hiding something. You can't help but love Dean, he really is an honest, good character.
"I can give you everything you want, Allie. All you have to do is let me."
Dean is broken but he's such an open book compared to Allison. He is everything she needs. Their story provokes so many thoughts and emotions . You feel a weight lifted, that you didn't realize was there, once you finish this book. It will definitely sit with you for a long time
"Once you're shattered, you can be mended but the cracks are still there. "
I don't want to give anything away but my heart is so heavy for these characters. And not just them but to everyone who goes through this ,on all sides.
It was an amazing read and I hope everyone gives it a chance
