Marcie Macari is a writer, speaker and workshop facilitator, who has traveled extensively throughout North America and Southern Africa leading communication workshops, teaching drama techniques and her passion: Birth as a Spiritual Rite of Passage for women. Marcie is a natural parenting and breastfeeding advocate, and all around creative spirit, but considers her biggest accomplishments to be her daughter and two sons, all born naturally with midwives. Just kidding. :-)
But "She Births: A Modern Woman's Guidebook for an Ancient Rite of Passage" sets itself apart from your standard pregnancy and birth book right from the strong statement of the raw, emotive cover art. Macari is a mother of three who offers forth this self-published effort to "every woman who has even given Birth - to children, ideas, or themselves". Placing birth back into a context of a "rite of passage", Macari emphasizes the sacred and spiritual side of birth. You will not find standard childbirth education fare in this book. If you're looking for recipes, exercises or cute little "what does the baby look like now" graphics, you'll need to look elsewhere. But a woman seeking a book that will speak to her spirit and not just her mind, will have found a sister in Macari.
Macari's writing style is easy to read and at times I even laughed out loud. (One chapter subtitled "Is Childbirth painful" starts, "Yes. End of Chapter. Sorry, I couldn't resist.") I did find her use of capitalization somewhat distracting, although I see the point she was trying to make by emphasizing particular words. For a self-published book I found the layout and design to be excellent. Worth the purchase price alone are the fabulous quotes about birth interspersed between sections and the wonderful birth stories within.
"She Births" is sure to cause controversy and discomfort in some, and renewal and empowerment for others. Judge for yourself, AFTER you have read it. :-)
At the end of each chapter she provides a written meditation and insightful questions to help you gain a deeper sense of the info presented in the chapter.
If you are looking for a book that speaks to the emotional and spiritual aspects of birthing, this book can give you a more well-rounded way of thinking about the process.
Own the journey, wherever it might lead you. Birth your babies in awareness, is the basic message of this book. If this offends you, please ask yourself why.
