I enjoy all sorts of books--romances, new adult, chick lit, paranormals, suspense. But I've never seen a book quite like The She Code. It's lighthearted, fun, and sometimes angsty, but it also has sketches and comic book pages that tie in with the plot. I was impressed by how cleverly this was done. Also, it's hard to pin this story down to any certain subgenre, because it's one part "new adult" (the main character is in her early twenties and just out of college), part "chick lit" (parties, dresses, dating, fun!), and part "geek lit," which covers all the pop culture references. This book takes place in the early 2000s, so it was interesting to go back to a time when everything wasn't digital. I highly recommend The She Code to anyone who is looking for a fun, fresh read. Loved it!

Mandy is a young girl who's just beginning her life after graduation. She'd love to be a comic book penciler, and that's what she's set her professional
sights on. Meanwhile, she lives in downtown San Diego with her best friend, Sheila, who's just returned from a post-college vacation back east with a "cosmopolitan aunt."
Only Sheila has changed. She's come back with a new attitude and seems to be "moving in on" the guys Mandy has her eye on, like she's in competition with her.

Or is Mandy just imagining things?

THE SHE CODE is good-time romp that took me back to that special time in life when I was in my early twenties. The San Diego setting was evocative, and I loved the way the art work was integrated into the story.

Mandy is a girl who is into comics and refers to her admission of pop culture as "going into geek mode." So, basically, she's a nerd. I like her!

The She Code mirrors the lives of wild wolves and the world is full of them. Just like when you were in school, work has their groups. Well, working for a company that publishes comics, you have your "all-male artist" (of course,) number crunchers, and female admin. Mandy is a receptionist. "Witness an art degree in action." "Women are still a minority in this industry, since comics have a rep for catering to boys and their toys." (19) So relatable!

You can't help but adore Mandy. She's quirky, funny, smart, and imaginative, but she's also shy, especially when it comes to boys. She's like a child whose idea of fun is watching TV in her jammies or playing video games. Too cool! But, just like the rest of us, she has fears and doubts. "Once I put the professional blue pencil to paper, I'd have to face the questions: What if I wasn't good enough? What if I couldn't get beyond run-of-the-mill and into something better?" (63) Ah, the struggle of an artist is all too real.

I also loved the comics in the book. I especially liked that her comic book character, Luka, inspired her to be brave. "Mandy Halsey, head in the clouds, stuck on so much fantasy in her life because reality killed." (175)

This is an engaging tribute to girl power! Witty, endearing, and inspires you to "do what you wanna do."

Like Barney Stinson's beloved Bro Code, here is a female version - the She Code.
Many abides by it unlike her best friend Sheila, who seems to go after every
man that Mandy is interested in. Surely she's imagining it, right? Must read
for everyone!

Loved this fresh New Adult novel. I laughed out loud at Mandy's attempts to break into the comic industry while navigating the twenty-something mating rituals. Her best friend isn't what she seems and crushes on any guy Mandy shows interest in. I love how Chris Marie Green unfolds Mandy's coming of age along side her parents' reunion after a painful divorce. The cool illustrations are a bonus to an already great story. I'll be looking for other stories in this fun series.

This book captures the beauty and craziness of youth, but you don't have to be twenty-something to enjoy it. I think it's an all-age read. If you're older like I am, it will make you feel young and wild and free. It's a story any girl/woman can relate to. The main character goes through a lot crap, but this story will leave you smiling at the end. Even the title is chic! Bravo to Ms. Green for writing a book no else has dared to write! The artwork was fascinating, too. Such fun drawings.

I love novels about female friends, and this one really covers the bases beautifully. Mandy is a fun, twenty-something heroine living in San Diego with her with BFF Sheila, a not so great friend after all, who definitely breaks the She Code. The book is well written with a crisp narrative style that entertains and moves the story along swiftly. Between poignant dealings with her parents and the rocky road of finding the right guy, it took me through a range of emotions from sadness to laugh out loud humor. I also really loved the actual comics inserted throughout the book.

The She Code will make you laugh and also cringe at Mandy's attempts to navigate the eternal quest for a guy to love, her relationship with her BFF,her parents, and her job in the comic book industry. Set in the early twenty-first century, the story evokes an era before our world went electronic. The background and the characters are richly drawn. Mandy's got plenty of problems and plenty of angst, and I particularly liked her coming to terms with her talent as a comic book artist. Coming of age at its best.
