Editorial Reviews

Review

“Crack open Scarlett Savage’s novel and you will feel as though you’re sitting in the living room of relatives you love . . . and yet somehow can’t avoid when you desperately want to. The characters are so vibrant and the dialogue so funny, honest, and three-dimensional that it’s hard to believe this is fiction. Something remarkable happens as we follow three generations of strong women through a startling revelation that redefines the relationships between them all—all of a sudden, we’re not on the outside looking in. We’ve become part of the family.”
—Jodi Picoult, New York Times’ bestselling author of The Storyteller

“Savage reframes her award-winning play, She F*&%ing Hates Me, into novel form, as three generations of Applebaum women face their tribulations with family jokes and wry wit. . . . Nicely retains the sophisticated, urbane spirit of its theatrical origin.”— Kirkus Reviews

This was a wonderful read. Yes, I know, the general public will label it a "chick book." It's much more than that. I totally identified with the old man and learned some things about myself from reading this important first novel. i hope the men out there will give it a chance. Probably the outstanding aspect of the book was the extremely well-crafted dialogue. I now look forward to the movie.

Suzanne is thirty-six years old, the mother to an eighteen-year-old daughter, Molly that is getting ready to head to Vassar for her freshman year. Suzanne has also just left her husband of eighteen years and has moved back in with her recovering alcoholic mom, Ava while she figures out how to put her life back together. One weekend, right before school starts, Molly comes home and she has a big announcement to share with the family; she also has her “friend” Brandon in tow. Suzanne is afraid that Molly is coming home to announce she’s pregnant, repeating the mistakes she made in the past, ending up just like her.

Molly has watched her mother work herself day and night in order to provide for the family. Steve, Suzanne’s soon-to-be ex hasn’t worked a day in his life. He’s a self-proclaimed “musician”, which means he stays in his home studio all day while playing on his synthesizer doing bong hits. It’s only when Molly has graduated from high school that she is able to finally leave Steve and go on with her life. Molly has convinced her to go back to school and finally make the life for her that she deserves.

Ava is in her early sixties and she’s one, hot, grandma. She does yoga, stars in the stage shows produced by the senior living village in which she lives, and goes for daily walks. She’s been sober for seventeen years, finally getting her act together for the sake of Suzanne and Molly. She is a widow, her husband and soul mate Jimmy dying years before, and she is ready to get back in the dating scene. She is active in AA as well as meddling in the affairs of her daughter. (That’s what moms do, right?

I do not know why there are so many 5 star reviews for this book. I expected a good read after looking at the reviews, but it was far from it. I have to wonder about the Amazon rating system. The conversations are confusing and immature although the characters are 60 and 38. I had to stop after about 30 minutes. I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm asking for a refund.

I truly do not understand the other reviews that rave about this book. The first ten pages were so irritating, I asked for my money back. The first rule of creative writing is show, don't tell. The author almost never uses the word "said"...she feels the need to tell us the meaning of each character's words..the mark of a real amateur. I wish I still had it on my kindle so I could give actual examples, but I highly suggest you read the first few pages in the kindle preview before spending money on this book.

I was really into this book at first. I really started getting interested in the characters and story but it took forever. Halfway through the book you still hadn't figured out why the daughter had come to visit and what all the drama was about. There were these long drawn out conversations and everything was drug out way too far for more taste because it never got anywhere. The author also dropped in all of these weird random side plots that never fit or made sense. I can count on one hand the books I have given up on but this was definitely one of them. So disappointed total waste of time.

I read an earlier version of this book and I literally could NOT put it down. Great, compelling story with fun characters. And a feel-good vibe.

Buy it. Read it. Love it!

I just loved this book. It is just a feel good story of 3 geneations of women, each with their own struggles. They are all so unique and different but there is so much love there. No exotic sex scenes and that's fine with me. It left me with a smile and that is a plus. Grandma was a hoot, loved her humor. I definately say read this if you like a feel good story. It was a stand alone story but I would love to read more about these 3 amazing wmen.

The only thing I can say is I want more, mire Laura and Suzanne s story in the future, where everyone ends up. It was funny and sad, amusing, poignant, educational without being preachy, and the characters I felt like I know them ,as if they are parts of people in my life.
