Essential Depot's Shea Butter is completely raw, unrefined and has a thick and often nutty aroma. We do not use bleaches, deodorizers, or chemicals to change the scent or appearance of Shea Butter. We do not advise you purchase Shea Butter that has been altered; as this depletes the product of its healing and medicinal properties, and also destroys the vitamins and minerals naturally present in Shea Butter.

When I got it I immediately noticed that there were little brown dust like sheddings around he lid. The when I opened he lid here was a seal that you had to remove before getting the Shea butter. When I took it off the smell was so... I do t even know how to describe it. Kind of smokey and natural. Definitely no added fragrance, just raw Shea butter. And when I touched it, it was a grainy feel then immediately melted on my fingertips when I started to rub my fingers together. This is definitely raw unrefined Shea butter. I plan on ordering another container. It works so well with my 4 year old son's exIcema. His skin looks so nice and smooth with a nice glow/shine. I am hoping they will come out with a larger container. The One I have will not last long.
Mixing this shea butter with other oils and ingredients (such as coconut oil, almond oil, NOW Solutions Glycerine Vegetable, 16-Fluid Ounces) makes for a very desirable skin moisturizer and protection. Living in Colorado, in a semi arid to nearly arid climate, winter heating and the extreme temps (cold outside and warm inside) make for very rough and difficult to treat skin. Creating my own recipe, I have found the solution that helps keep my skin from feeling tight and dry between showers and I don't need to reapply my concoction after work/before bed like I would with the more expensive commercially available lotions such as Curel and Eucerin. In addition, I believe the chemicals used in most lotions work against your skin instead of in harmony with it.
Also, I use it alone on my face every night, after I take off my makeup. It's a bit greasy but you get over that quickly if you want a healthy option for the delicate skin on your face. It's also great to put in your hair if your hair and scalp are feeling dry. Just put it on after a shampoo and leave it in for as long as you like.
I purchased my first Essentials Depot shea butter in September and am now waiting on my second jar. This stuff goes a long way and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
It is ivory color and has a faint nutty, smokey smell.
I will purchase again when I run out.
So, I tried to use it by gently warming it then letting it solidify very fas in the freezer. The idea of this process is to help melt all the fatty acid molecules to the same melting point to be all equally dispersed and warmed. Afterwards, the rapid cooling has the fatty acid molecules "solidify" all at once, instead of thenthree different solidifying temps -there are three diff fatty acids in shea- thr grainy effect is when the butter is left to re solidify slowly at a random temperature, and when this happens, the molecules of the same fatty acids stick together thus forming "crystal" like structures in the shea (doesn't effect the actual properties of shea it's just for better feel to rid the grainy)
Anyway! So this particular shea butter took WAY WAY longer to soften and melt compared to any other shea iv ever worked with. It almost was if there was a small bit of a wax added to it or somehting because of the unusually high melting point it seemed to have.
It also never would even soften if I placed the jar in a diff cup of hot water, it didn't even kind of soften. It still stays hard as a brick, I even placed it in the feezer where I prefer to store my cocoa butter as well. About a month after, I chose to bring out the shea once more, and it was no surprise the shea butter looked EXACTLY as the shea did before it was frozen. Its just SO solid, and it also felt almost like the way lotion feels on my lips, not normal it's that annoying feeling if you have ever gotten lotion accidently on your lips.
I really wanted to like this, as I have almost all my other sheas, but I had to get a refund this was simply not usable. I personally can't recommend this.
