Then there's Mario. He's a bit more serious, placing a high-value on maintaining traditions. His reactions to Kandi were hilarious! Especially in the beginning.
So these two come together when Kandi makes a booking mistake when purchasing her airline ticket. They are both from such different worlds, yet they were both what the other needed. The author really demonstrated her skill in developing these two very unique voices. I felt like I knew them.
If you love romantic comedies, buy this book NOW. I can't recommend it highly enough. It was such a satisfying read. Great to take to read on the beach when you just want to escape the hustle of the everyday. This is a fun, not-to-serious, quick read.
I loved Kandi--friendly, real, no-nonsense, weird-and-owns-it, funny, but surrounded by the superficial. Mario was great, too--passionate, real, determined, caring, but stuck in a bit of a rut, a bit isolated. She's a bit heavy handed, and he's a bit stubborn. They had the chemistry, and they both were what each of them needed. :) I loved how Kandi's accent slowly showed itself as she felt more and more comfortable around Mario and his family. That was a lovely touch!
The ending was completely satisfying, too. Can't wait for the author's next book!
The humor shines through right from the opening sentence, which is so great that I can't help quoting it:
Three things that have never failed me in life: the Golden Rule, intuition, and my stainless seven-inch barber shears.
The novel is written in the first person present, a tricky thing to pull off, but the author does so with flying colors. This lends immediacy to the action. The main character's snarky comments about the other passengers are both funny and a great way to show her character. The two main characters alternate sections. Both are in first person, but the voices are distinct enough for this not to be a problem.
A very well-written, nicely plotted, fun read. If you like romantic comedy, run right out and buy this one.
She is competent and passionate at what she does (hair) even to the point of being obsessive. And this does ring true with some young stylist / salon owner entrepreneurs that I know! Deep down, she just wants everyone to look and feel their best. She struggles to stay focused on securing her salon while her love interest struggles to keep traditional ways while everyone around him seems to be embracing technology and modern things.
You might enjoy if you are looking for a rom-com that is light and humorous.
The heavenly bodies are the comet of Los Angeles hair styling, and the planet of the Tlingit community of Alaska. A beautiful and compassionate hair stylist, trying to make it on time to a big trade show in Florida sits next to a handsome young Native American returning home after a lucrative modeling job in LA. She is on the wrong plane, thanks to a place name mix-up (ok, here you are going to have to crank up your disbelief suspension, but trust me, it's worth it). He is fascinated and appalled, all at once. She's just fascinated, by his hair (of course).
The story is very well-paced, it's full of tensions, realistic and diverse characters, and colorful situations, and...it's sexy...just enough to lend a good, strong frisson of excitement to the whole tale. You will admire the passionate belief systems of both principals, and recognize the difficulties presented by the supporting (I use that term loosely) cast of friends, business associates, and family members. There are some surprises sprinkled throughout, too, just like in real life.
I quite enjoyed making the movie in my head as I read the book, and I wish the same level of involvement and pleasure to you. Happy reading!
