Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2. These sheep have been in a jeep, on a ship, in a shop, on a hike, and out to eat?maybe it's time they took a rest. Sheep Trick or Treat is just not up to par with the earlier titles. Shaw's familiar rhythm and rhyme are still in evidence as the six prepare costumes and head out trick or treating. They collect goodies from the farm animals ("Spiders give a dried-up fly. Sheep decide to pass it by"). And as one might expect, they are followed by wolves dressed in sheepskins. Apple's illustrations here are somewhat dark and shadowy. The sheep dressed as a vampire on the front cover may actually frighten some children. There is nothing terribly wrong with this book, but it just isn't very interesting. Unless you are badly in need of Halloween books, or have some die-hard fans who must see it, this is not a necessary addition to picture-book collections. These sheep have gone on better romps before.?Dina Sherman, Brooklyn Children's Museum, NY

"They’re at it again. The rambunctious sheep, who have so delighted kids with their antics, are back, this time decked out for Halloween highjinks. . . . A Halloween treat to enjoy over and over again." —Booklist Booklist, ALA

Oh, I so disagree with the Editoral on this book! The writing has a wonderful rhythm, and I love reading it aloud! The situation is absurd, which makes for a hilarious book, plus the illustrations are first-rate. The facial expressions are so human-like, they make us laugh. There is nothing frightening about this book. In fact, the scariest scene is the front cover with the lamb posing as a vampire. Sheep Trick or Treat is a short book and can be read in less than 2-minutes, but it usually takes us longer because we love the illustrations so. I think it's a WINNER, and one I highly recommend over other not-so-good holiday works!

This writing team of Shaw and Apple have given us another winner in every way. Let me start by stating that I very much do not agree with the assessment and opinion here from the School Library Journal. This journal, while usually so much more accurate than Publisher's Weekly, sort of missed the mark with this one. Perhaps it is just a matter of preception, we all see things a bit differently. For myself, and the kids I read this one to, there is not much to not like about this book. Yes, the illustrations are a bit darker that is normal for this series, but the for goodness sakes, it Halloween, it's suppose to be dark! The rhyming text is as delightful here as in the other books of this series and the kids do all seem to love it and it certainly holds thier attention. There is so much junk out there in the way of Halloween books, it is a delight to find one so readable as this offering. This is a great one to add to your library. I dare say, you and your kids will love it.

I also own and love "Sheep in a Jeep" in the same series. This version has longer rhymes (in rhyming iambic tetrameter) and it is cleverly written. Some of the verses might feel a little overworked, and just the tiniest bit forced, but not really. It tells the story of the sheep preparing their costumes and then going trick-or-treating at their various animal friends' homes, receiving eggs from the chickens, clover from the cows, etc. On their way home their frightening costumes scare away the wolves, their would-be predators. They arrive home safely to enjoy their treats. The sheep's expressions are hilarious, and they are really fun to look at. My only complaint is the line "it's dark, but they are not afraid," as if it would be customary for them to be afraid due to the darkness. I try to stay away from stories about being scared of the dark, so that I don't introduce that concept to my son, who is still too young for it to occur to him to be scared of the dark. I haven't come across very many Halloween-themed board books, and this one is a great one. A great addition to your holiday/special occasion collection. I plan to pick up other books in this series.

Sheep trick or treat was my second sheep book! Great for Halloween reading or just any time! The rhymes are catchy and the story is so cute. A must have for anyone who likes the sheep books, or anyone who has never read them!

Love these books! This author and illustrator are truly gifted. My son and I read these books when he was young and I gave them as gifts to another young person. I recommend them highly. ALL the stories by this author are great!

Sheep always get such a bum rap for being such docile, silly followers. Not this time. In "Sheep Trick or Treat" our sheep are bold and in charge! Put on a cape, add two vampire teeth, stand just so, scrunch the eyes--yes, sheep, that's the way to go!

On Halloween night six sheep and their goose friend prepare their disguises for some trick or treat fun. Their intense faces are baa-baa-licious as they size and stitch and glue. They are even funny concentrating to make humps in one sheep's wool for dinosaur fins. How could a child be afraid of these sheep?

There are two pages that might be a tad daunting and provide shivers--the same shown on the cover. The shadows are really spooky! Even the black cat at the nearby barn hisses his fear. The horses, the cows, the chickens, even the spider give up their goodies for the sheep, then they head home to feast on their treats.

Wait, more animals. The wolves! What will happen with the wolves? You will just have to read the book to find out.

The illustrations, created by colored pencils, are beautiful with bright, but softened colors. The rhymes add to the overall effect. This book is a delightful winner with the small set, although older students are known to be seduced by the thrill of the story!

"As the Halloween moon rises/Sheep are fixing up disguises"

With flowing rhymes and beautiful illustrations, this is the best of the Sheep books I have seen so far. The rhymes are slightly longer than Sheep in a Jeep Lap-Sized Board Book and Sheep in a Shop (Read-Along) , and they are fun to read. The illustrations are charming as always. The part about the sheep not being afraid in the dark wood is a good illustration of how to be brave. All in all, this is a book that you *could* keep for a special time of year ... but you probably won't.
