In this volume, Jingo is upset that his sheets have been dyed pink by someone's red knickers in the wash, and he resolves to leave the Manor and join the Carnival. A few adventures follow upon this decision, and it ends up with Jingo in a bit if trouble, the gang from the Manor helping out, and a twist ending being enjoyed by all. As always, Jingo's spider pet, Mr. Legs, steals the scenes he is in.
This volume seemed a bit shorter than "A Frightening Recipe" and less attention was paid to the Manor and to the other ghosts. For fans that's probably fine. For newcomers it might not be immediately clear who is who and what the Manor is. Starting with the first volume might be a good idea, but since the stories are pretty simple after one run-through this book should be perfectly clear even if read out of order.
As with the other volumes, this seems to be a reasonable choice for very earlier readers, and could be a decent read to or read with. It has no evident spelling errors, typos or grammar challenges, which puts it well above the Kindle freebie average. (Oh, and as a nice bonus, the illustrations are actually well done and effective, and complement the reading experience.)
So, a nice little find and a fine book to try out with your little reader.
Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to the author or the publisher of this book.
I'm going to read A Frightful Recipe tonight as my reading book before bed and I hope that Momma will bring it into story time and read it to my class.
Momma Here! This being a children's book I thought the best way to review it was to read it to "The Babes" and let them tell me what they thought. Since parents are always looking for great new stories that will get their children interested in reading. I did the typing for Twila as she told me her thoughts on the Chatswood Spooks.
As a mom, reading these books to the babes was really a lot of fun! These are very cute stories and it does my heart good to see Twila sitting down with both books and reading them with Fox. She very carefully studies the illustrations and even went to her art table and began to try to draw Winifred. The Chatswood Spooks books are very engaging. We received the physicNotti Thistledoreal copies of the Chatswood Spooks from Notti Thistledore herself!
For future Chatswood Spooks books one thing I would like to see is better formatting for the print version. The illustrations and print are very clean and clear, but there is something missing from the formatting that I can't quite put my finger on. As a point of continuity I would also recommend having the title pages of the book be uniform for each volume.
Overall I thought these books were quite wonderful and will continue reading the series to The Babes. I recommend that parents absolutely pick up these little gems, a great introduction to "chapter books" for the little ones. With the right exposure and if the books make it into the right hands, this series has the potential to be up there with Magic Tree House and the like!
Thank you so much Notti for sharing your wonderful books with us.
All of the Chatswood Spooks books are wonderfully illustrated and are just long enough for a good bedtime story, or an easy piece of reading for kids who are just venturing into reading novels. They're funny, and will appeal to both boys and girls. I'm looking forward to new stories in this series and can't wait to read them
