About Sheila Moriarty
Sheila Moriarty was born in Boston, to a hard working father and an imaginative mother. She graduated from Our Lady of Presentation Schools. After winning many awards for her schools, her teachers thought that Sheila could make a top notch scientist. But she wanted to study art. Everyone seemed surprised when Sheila entered the Sisters of Notre Dame. There she could study art part time while teaching high school. Emanuel College awarded her a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Sheila loved teaching, but not straight from a textbook; instead she urged students to look for answers within themselves. Some of her convent colleagues complained. Eventually, Sheila was given a choice: either give up her teaching approaches or leave the community. Sheila left. She began a new life by moving to Saint Paul and became Cretin High School's first female teacher where she continued as an innovator in teaching religion. She was awarded a Bush Fellowship and earned a degree in Social Work from the University of Minnesota. She was a ghost writer for three Minnesota governors of different parties. She returned to watercolor painting when diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease which slowed her handwriting and typing. She lives north of St. Paul with her husband Bob Keim.
