Product Description

'Shelter Island' is the latest project from contemporary jazz keyboardist Cal Harris Jr. It features 10 original songs that are excellent examples of what is rapidly becoming the style of his style - haunting, melodic and enchanting tunes rounded out by impeccable arrangements, production, and stellar performances by world-class musicians. On his latest CD, Harris takes the listener on a musical journey to 'Shelter Island' a place where a range of emotions is explored from the excitement of the title track, to the carefree vibe of 'By the Bay' - a warmly romantic groove that features excellent solos by guitarist Joel Del Rosario, and saxophonist Keith Mckelley to beautifully accentuate the breathtaking keys of Harris. His 'Sunset Chasers' is a heart wrenching melody interpreted beautifully by saxophonist Marion Meadows. Lest you think Harris can't put a little funky, sexy R&B on it.... there's 'Smooth'. The Billboard top 10 smash featuring Elan Trotman. Get ready for the hip swaying and finger popping with this one! Harris is a master of his craft he writes, arranges, produces and performs with a beauty further defined by the excellence in which he does them all. His is a true talent and a breath of fresh air. Harris brings the depth of emotion back to smooth jazz and makes you realize how much you missed it. Shelter Island is a CD that will stay on repeat in the player, inviting you to discover something new every time you hear it.

Review

I first became aware of keyboard player Cal Harris Jr with the release of his CD Inside Out which at the time I explained as being ten years in the making but with a vibe that made it entirely worth the wait. Now he is back with one of the hottest singles I have heard this year, the sumptuous and appropriately titled Smooth . Not only does it feature more of Cal s rapidly emerging trademark sound but also includes a delicious interjection of sax from the highly regarded Elan Trotman --Denis Poole, Smooth Jazz Therapy

Great album! Been waiting on this album for awhile. Well worth the wait! --Wiley Kyles, iTunes

He's done it again! Cal Harris Jr. is the best! I love all of them especially 'By the Bay' --Holly Baby, iTunes

This is a beautiful CD, which has come out just in time for the start of the summer season. The entire vibe and mood of the CD is wonderful, and the tracks are still eclectic enough to make the entire disc a joy to listen to.

The tracks that I particularly enjoyed were: "Shelter Island," "The Waiting," "By The Bay," and "Smooth." Cal's voicings are beautiful as is Elan's Trotman's sound and phrasing on saxophone; they're a very nice complement to each other. You can tell that Cal has taken a lot of time to write and meticulously arrange these tracks. The record left me feeling somewhat nostalgic, in that it reminded me of the work of Rodney Franklin and Paul Hardcastle from my younger days.

Forgive me for sounding pedantic, but in a world where I feel that the genre of Smooth Jazz has become diluted by overproduced music, with a lack of general musicianship...this recording really stands out to rise above the genre.

Many thanks to Mr. Harris for creating a CD, which when I play it allows me to forget about the stresses of the real world. I can't thank you enough, and I would highly recommend this CD to all!

I had never even heard of Cal Harris until I bought this album. It's clearly smooth jazz, but there is something almost theatrical about each piece. My favorite tracks are "Sunset Chasers" and "Wave Riders." Can't wait for his next joint.

The CD Shelter Island was good, this is my first CD from this artist. I will most likely purchase other CD's by him.
Cal Harris has a very smooth and refreshing sound. Hope to hear more of his work.

Wow I love this CD--Mr Harris has created his own island with this one! The great music arrangement and keyboards are there as with his previous project. However, the song arrangement of this album takes you on a journey along the beach, through the caves, and atop the cliffs!...Shelter Island. Definitely, a "must-have" piece of work from Cal Harris Jr. Pick it up and listen--you'll be glad you did!

I've always enjoyed Cal's Music ever since his 2009 CD "Inside Out". I was always a big fan of the title track and "She Loves The Water", and, since that CD, i was wondering if he'd ever make another album; but, now, apparently, he has, and this is definitely a start to finish. I'm going to add the title track to one of my smooth jazz compilations. I'm sure the folks will love it just as much as I do! Congratulations, Cal, and thanks for the good music.

This is a supremely listenable CD. Imagine Jazz sounds with an eclectic cool sound. That in a nutshell is this CD. I am a die-hard jazz fan with over 5000 CDs. This CD is easily now in my top ten of all time. I listen to this in the car too and from work and thus far have not tired of listening to it. It is a great, great CD. I am now primed to buy his other two CDs - if they are half as good as this one they will be eminently listenable and enjoyable.

Esteemed contemporary jazz keyboardist Cal Harris Jr. definitely brings the "smooth" and the "sexy" back to Smooth Jazz with his outstanding sophomore release, SHELTER ISLAND. Mr. Harris has concocted a luscious concept album that will whisk you away to exotic, mysterious places where you can reconnect with your higher self and feel truly stress-free. He's gathered top-shelf talent to support his beautiful playing, too. Sax work from Marion Meadows, Elan Trotman, and talented newcomer Keith McKelley, together with Ricky Lawson (Yellowjackets) on drums and up-and-coming indie guitarist Joel del Rosario, add immeasurably to the lovely patina of the ten original tracks, including the radio hits "Smooth" and "By the Bay." I must tell you - this is one of the most beautifully assembled and performed keyboard-driven albums I've heard so far this year... one that any Smooth Jazz aficionado would be delighted to include in their collection. That means you! ~SCOTT O'BRIEN
