- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2018Platform: PlayStation 4Edition: Shenmue I & IIVerified Purchase“It’s official - I got my copy of Shenmue 1 & 2 for my future PS4! I’m so glad for going back to my late childhood to my early youth!
“I will never forget I got my Sega Dreamcast in 2001 as my 13th birthday gift. Back then I started out playing demos, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider Chronicles, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, and a rented MDK 2. The last two did not amuse me at all due to the complicated gameplay. I already beat the Tomb Raider games while setting new records for the fastest to beat. Then, a new game came before me - Shenmue!
“In 2000, my brother-in-law and sister were playing Shenmue, which was unknown to me at the time. I could remember them having a hard time trying to for citizens of a town (I found out later on that it was Dobuita) and recall hearing someone (that was Ryo Hazuki) asking, ‘Do you know any sailors?’, but it was unsuccessful. Afterwards, my in-law quit playing the game after so much boredom.
“After I got my Sega Deamcast in 2001, my in-law gave me his old game that he couldn’t beat. I was surprised to see that the case contained THREE CDs to be played one at a time. Thus, I was brought into the depths of an epic gaming world that simulated Japan in the mid-1980s.
[SPOILER ALERT]
“Ryo Hazuki, who is the main character of the game, returned to the Hazuki Dojo to find a suspicious black car. He found Ine-San laying at the house’s entrance who is okay, then ran into Fuku-San who got tossed out of the dojo itself, and entered to find his father Iwao Hazuki standing face-to-face with Lan Di. After being forced into giving up a powerful artifact and spare his son’s life, Iwao, who was beaten to death by his rival, encouraged his son Ryo to cherish his friends close to hm. He died afterwards, sending Ryo into days of mourning. As a little known fact: His father death was on the same day as Ryo’s 18th birthday.
[SPOILER ENDS]
“In that gaming world, I was amazed by the atmosphere and how everything looked like at that time. There was the winter that turned to rain, got warm for a time, then more rain, and back to the winter just in time for Christmas to take place.
“As for the people, there are a number of individuals to speak with and gain experience from their wisdom as spoken by the elderly through the game. Even those who work for their select business and restaurants are kind enough to help out. Of course, there are rude people you have to put up with while looking for info. And, let’s not forget that one young woman, who is about two years older than Ryo, is looking out for him.
“Plus, you get to ride throughout Japan which includes taking the bus from Dobuita to New Yokosuka Harbor. Let’s not forget about having opportunities to ride a motorcycle also in that country. Eventually, you get to have those good experiences.
“Also, there is the famous Quick Time Event (aka QTE) where you get a timed moment for you to act quick before something bad happens as a failed QTE. This includes saving a girl from being hit by a soccer ball to defend yourself from bullies dressed in black coats. Thus, QTE can also be used to save yourself from getting either caught at night or end up dead. Indeed, any QTE can be a life saver in the game.
“In addition, you get to have fun winning at slot machines for a little trinket to an awesome gaming certificate. Let’s not forget you can use your time to spending your in-game hours at the local gaming store. The possibilities to earn bragging rights are near-endless. Remember NOT to lose all of your yen while having a good time!
“My personal favorite ever since I played the game was getting to spend time practicing your fighting move. You can do it in places at the Hazuki Dojo or at a parking lot, along with other places where you can have your privacy. More fighting moves can either be learned from people of interest, going to a antique store to pick up an expensive scroll, or even find them in the most unlikely of places. They will be very useful in the long run.
“Furthermore, there are places to earn yen to be used to go further into the game from a select workplace. As a spoiler, Ryo needs to get a job at New Yokosuka Harbor to have enough funds for a long trip by cruise ship and locate Lan Di to avenge his father’s death in Hong Kong. The spoiler ends here.
“That’s all I have to say about the first Shenmue. I have yet to experience the second one and continue the epic story with Ryo Hazuki who will not stop until his father’s killer is stopped.
“Lastly, when I get my PS4, I’ll get to experience those two and play for hours! In the words of Ryo, ‘I will get them, Father” and, ‘Father, I’m going to Hong Kong.’”

- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2018Platform: PlayStation 4Edition: Shenmue I & IIVerified PurchaseI am so happy that they released this HD remaster. One of my favorites from childhood is back...with a vengeance! It is truly a unique game with only Yakuza, its successor, following in the same type of game format. I am also a big fan of the yakuza franchise where Yakuza 6 and Yakuza 0 being among my favorite games of all time as well. As I was only a little kid when I played the 1st time around I did not have the necessary funding to get Shenmue 2 sent from overseas. Now I can finally play when I always wanted to play back in the day. And so far it does not disappoint as I am playing the 1st one so I can relive the story 1st.
A couple of notes for prospect of buyers; this game along with yakuza are very unique in their gameplay. You will not spend all of your time focusing on the main story but rather you should really take in the entire experience that the game has to offer. This game seamlessly blends the side quests with the main quest line and encourages you to explore. You would be wise to listen. The mechanics of this game, as another user mentioned, are a little clunky for modern day gaming; with the camera difficulties being the main drawback. However if you keep things in perspective and realize this game was made nearly 20 years ago but still stands up to modern titles very effectively, you should really enjoy playing this game. This is especially important to 1st time players of the game who are expecting modern day mechanics. It will not happen to meet your expectations of you can not keep things in perspective
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2018Platform: PlayStation 4Edition: Shenmue I & IIVerified PurchaseI absolutely love Shenmue. I had every version of the game and even bought a Japanese Dreamcast back in the days for Shenmue 2.
You probably know already all the perks of this HD port so, I won't talk too much about them. It is great to be able to switch between Japanese and English voices, and the 16:9 ratio is a great addition.
Now, my problem (and after looking online, it seems I'm not the only one) comes from a lot of bugs and glitches that weren't even a thing on the original Dreamcast release 20 years ago. I play on PS4, the original, not Pro version, and so far I haven't been able to see a single cutscene because the camera will stay focused on a random element. In the room, or the floor, and once the cutscene is over its back to normal.
I have also experienced some sound problems such as the sfx not playing for a while.
I have already downloaded the 1.01 patch, so clearly this port needs more work.
I am using a physical copy, but I read this is pretty much a hit or miss case, happening to some PC and console players alike, just a matter of luck at this point.
For me, these glitches take you out of the real Shenmue experience, and I can imagine how frustrating this might be for newcomers who might wonder why this game was praised and has such a huge legacy and following.
I'm pretty sure this will be fixed by Sega, hopefully sooner than later.
I will of course update the rating once this is corrected, but for now, this isn't the true Shenmue experience, and that's a pity.
Hope this isn't happening to a lot of you oitthere, because it really is a fantastic game that deserves all the praises it received in its time.

TommyReviewed in Canada on August 31, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Best game ever
Platform: PlayStation 4Edition: Shenmue I & IIVerified Purchase(from my Dreamcast metacritic review) In this players humble opinion, the greatest video game ever created. Yu Suzuki's brainchild, Shenmue 1 and 2 was a work of art , and came very close to simulating a young Japanese man's life and struggles in the late 80's. The innovation was staggering....It was an archetype for many features we see in gaming today, including QTE's, weather effects (weather was randomized and actual recorded weather forecasts were used), interactivity etc. It propelled the medium to new heights and left a lasting impression on those that had the privilege to play it. Although it was a financial failure, and left the world with a whimper (but like the phoenix it has been resurrected from the ashes), it was an attempt to defy the tested the tried principles of gaming mechanics and transcend the boundaries of video gaming as a whole.
The atmosphere was just off the charts. You could start chatting with just about anyone, and you truly felt like you were part of a living, breathing world. You could visit an arcade , collect toys , feed kittens or just hang out at the soda machine and gulp down fizzy drinks all day. Later , you could participate in arm wrestling matches with Spanish men that oozed machismo, or take a load off and play a round of darts with a snobbish mustachio dude. The world was yours to discover and manipulate as you saw fit. The variety in gameplay methods never allowed the game itself to drag on, the sheer quantity of things to do and places to go could keep you busy for hours. There were easter eggs like obtaining a sega saturn game or participating in duck racing. Ahh, the memories.
The graphics were unparalleled at the time. The Dreamcast's 200mhz (or so) processor was tested to it's limits, everything was thrown at it except the proverbial kitchen sink, but it did not falter and other than a few areas (pigeon park) where the frame rate would slow to a crawl (not on the PS4 though), the game ran smoothly. The orchestral score and in game music were also memorable , from the opening prologue and Lan Di's enigmatic entrance scene to the tomato convenience store theme (best jingle evah!).
Yu Suzuki and his team poured their souls into this game, and it's reflected in every facet, interaction and the design itself. Luckily, the fan-base never waned and through the recognition of a memorable work of art, Shenmue aficionados have literally poured their admiration and money to see this thing come to life again and now an entire generation of players who missed it or weren't alive at the time of it's initial release get to experience the unforgettable story of Ryo's quest to avenge his father.
** The graphics are better obv on the PS4 but other than lighting, revamped menus, no load times and much smoother frame-rate it's pretty much the same game(s) from 1999/2001.
