About the Author

Since his early years, J. Drew Brumbaugh has been pursuing two of his life’s passions, writing and martial arts. His published pieces include both fiction and non-fiction articles including short stories and two novels. A native Ohioan, Mr. Brumbaugh was born in Athens, Ohio. During his early childhood his family moved to northeast Ohio. As a young man, Mr. Brumbaugh spent time crewing on a Great Lakes iron ore boat, earning money to attend college. After graduation from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps. Following military service, he entered private industry and is now the Director of Quality for a local corporation. In his spare time Mr. Brumbaugh continues to write, concentrating on novels and is head instructor at the karate dojo that he, along with his wife and business partner, Carolyn Berg, own and operate. Currently Mr. Brumbaugh and Ms. Berg share their Mentor, Ohio home with an ever-changing flow of family, friends, students, goldfish and their dog, Blue.

This book is dripping with original characters, new plotlines and plausible future technology which made it a great read. SHEPHERDS has several elements you expect to find in a good novel, including vivid / likeable characters who are locked in an adventurous plot that takes place in an original setting with cool, new technology. I'd go as far as to call SHEPHERDS fantastic for two reasons. First, it takes place out on, and below, the open ocean, which gives it a fresh and brisk feeling throughout. Second, the author incorporates radical new technology, both genetic and nautical, that has just enough science to make it plausible but never gets bogged down. The deep-sea cowgirls in this tale are sort of sexy. I've read a lot of nautical literature, and just want to say that this is not your grandfather's sea story. This is a cutting edge, fast-paced, science-based yet fun and adventurous tale set in a future where corporations and pirates and tuna herd shepherds fight for a living on, and below, the waves.

I really enjoyed this book. The setting is the near future on the high seas. It's part sci-fi, part action-adventure, & part mystery. The story is immediately engaging and the suspense builds with each chapter. The characters are really cool and the visual images created by the author give the story a fantasy-like feel, even though it is a suspenseful thriller. It also has some adult themes mixed in, so probably not one you want to pass on to your pre-teen kids. I really liked the fact that the storyline is relevant and totally believable. Great read, two thumbs up!

I really enjoyed this book. The entire story is set at sea and it is so well described that I felt like I became very immersed in the setting. I also really enjoyed the premise, that there are almost no wild fish left and huge corporations farm the sea, using dolphins and "swimmers" (people genetically modified to be more at home in the ocean) to herd these massive schools of fish. It was interesting and plausible.

However, my favorite part of the story was the dolphins. In Brumbaugh's world the dolphins are sentient (heck, maybe they are here as well). One of the characters speaks their language and in one section he and a dolphin he rescued have quite a long spiritual discussion that was actually pretty deep. It was pretty fascinating. Dolphins have a very unique view on life and are actually quite patient with how stubborn and foolish mankind is.

Okay, decades ago when I was in high school, I came up with a story idea about a future where we herded tuna. Lo, and behold, here's that idea fleshed out. A bit different concept than MY idea but as soon as I saw the premise, I KNEW I would be all in. Very well written, characters are fleshed out. Would LOVE another story set in this world...

J. Brumbaugh keeps coming out with new stories that have interesting characters that you can enjoy, with plots that aren't just cookie cutter with so many other stories coming out. I definitely enjoyed this one (well, I haven't read one yet by him that I haven't liked), and have made a point to watch for new books by him. I especially loved the dolphins in this!

-I don't know, but I had difficulty getting into it at first, I can't seem to get into the story. I found the first chapters quite dragging. But it does pick up as I went on. And in spite of the struggle I had at first, I can't deny that the story has a great plot and very original. I can't say it's bad, but my experience wasn't enough to give it a higher rating than 2 stars.

It's not often that I enjoy a future earth book but a friend recommended it. It was worth the read and the philosophy discussions were excellent. It would be nice to make this one a series. I referred this one to a different friend and she loved it too.

This book took me by surprise from the first page and didn't let go. I read it in one day as I couldn't put it down. The premise is wonderful, inventive, and a surprise with dolphins and "shepherds" (humans genetically engineered to operate in the ocean). The author's ability to rivet the tension and keep it going while building loving relationships and some horrific situations was masterful. The only downside was that it isn't a series and I didn't want it to end. Made me want to transform!
